Chances for Emory ED???

I am a high school senior in a very competitive school in California. I am American-Asian (Indian) and moved to America at the age of 8.

Academics:
My gpa is about 4.0 Weighted (and about 3.5 uw- a little on the low side)
I only took the SAT's once and received a 2260:
Math- 800
CR- 670
Writing- 790
Total- 2260

I have taken and am taking many honors/AP courses.

EC's:
Co-founded and was VP of the chess club in freshman year and am President this year.
3 years of Spanish club
Played two years of tennis for the school team.
I have played chess competitively since sixth grade and have received many awards. Some of them include:
1st place K-8 in NorCal 8th grade
Tied for 11th in World Open in 2006 (B class) and for 14th in 2007 (A class) in Philadelphia, PA.
I am currently ranked among the top 50 players for my age in the country.

Community Service and Work Experience:
Last summer, I when I visited India, I volunteered in an orphanage for a week, teaching children and playing with them. I also donated food, clothes, and toys, as well as as $200 of my chess earnings from tournaments.I lived with the kids there for a week and helped teach the children, play with them, and spend quality time with them. It was one of the most enriching experiences of my life (about 120 hours). I'm also writing my essay about this.

Helped teach kids in summer school in 2005. (80 hours)
Have taught chess (as a part-time job)
Currently have a job as a tutor at "Mathnasium." (10 hours a week)
Active volunteer in my local community for the city (40-50 hours).

I am leaning towards the business side, mostly finance and economics.

So any ideas about my chances of getting accepted into Emory early decision?

Thank you.

I'd say Emory is a reach.

Awwww, that's depressing. Even when applying Early Decision? I know my gpa is low, but I'm banking on my SATs and ECs to help me. Also, I wrote an essay about my experiences in the orphanage and I must say I am quite satisfied with it. I am debating whther to apply to Emory ED or Washington U in St. Louis ED. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the input though, and would appreciate more.

do emory ED, u stand no chance at WUSTL ED...i say emory is pretty much a match 4 sure.

BigWeight- I would have about the same chances for both of them since they are both around the same level in regard to reputation. I don't know how I wouldn't stand a chance at one and be a match at the other. Either they would both be reaches, or one would be a match and the other a slight reach. But in any case, thanks.

i also think emory is a match. i know it's only one case, but i know someone with 3.5 UW, 2200 SAT and less ECs than you who got in ED. good luck!

Thanks insubvert...what do you think about Wash U?

I don't know much about Wash U, but I'd say that it's still more reputable than Emory, and it's probably a reach. I'd say Emory is a definite match though.

You are highly likely to be admitted to Emory ED. Your numbers are fine for WashUStL and you stand a very good chance of being admitted ED if you write a strong application. California residency will be a plus when applying to Emory as this university is intent on building up its national reputation. I don't see any problem at all for you at WashUStL if you apply ED. Are you seeking fin'l aid? Not an issue at Emory, but may come into play at WashUStL. Contrary to some of the above posts, I do not view either school as a reach based on your posted profile in this thread. Especially if you are going to pursue finance & economics in light of your SAT I Math score of 800. You might want to consider aiming a bit higher and looking at Northwestern University ED. An excellent economics program and two certificate programs that are well regarded; the Kellogg Certificate for finance & management (I think) & another math based program which incorporates the social sciences & statistics. Both are highly selective, limited enrollment certificate programs. Just a thought. And yes, I am aware of all the CC posters with mid to high 1500+/1600 4.0 GPA scorers that got rejected last year. You seem to be a match for these programs. I think that you stand an excellent chance at all three schools if you apply ED. Without an ED app, I think that you are in at Emory and difficult to predict for WashUStL & Northwestern. Good Luck!

My brother got into Wash U early decision with a 2230 SAT, 3.45 UW GPA but 14 AP's (all 5's) and was also my schools version of IB. He was a 33 ACT, GPA isn't everything.

Thanks ColdWind and Regguy21. I really cannot decide whether to apply ED to WUSTL or Emory. Both are great schools, although Wash U might have a slight edge in terms of reputation. I need to decide today because I'm turning in teach recs forms tomorrow. Also, can I apply ED to WUSTL and if I get denied, apply ED2 to Emory (deadline is jan 1).

Thanks everyone.

Bump please could use some more input...

I also think Emory is a match.

You should be in if you ED.

My friend is super similar to you, but you have higher SAT scores, and our college counselor told her that she's got a good shot, so you have one too!

thanks spark.

I think your in, and I will be at emory this weekend visitng my sister!

About your essay. I'm not an expert but you definitely should not write it about volunteering.seriously. It's too common. sorry!Only trying to help :)

Dukebound- yeah i thought that too, but now that I'm done, I'm convinced that my essay is good. Also, it may be a conventional topic, but I wrote it in an unconventional way, not bragging about my services there at all but instead showing the reader how great the people in the orphanage were and how much i learned from them, not how much i taught them. lol sorry for that run-on.

ooh okay. It's np. I guess that would work too. I see that looking from your credentials that you're a math tutor. I honestly think that's really cool. I might consider tutoring others next year :) Question- does Algebra 2 get easier? I was kind of struggling with the first 2 chapters but now I've practiced the 3rd on my own ( i'm on break) and it's starting to click. Any advice?

Oh yeah, make sure you have teachers/friends/family read them!

I've had a few people read it already.

Once you get down the basics really well, Algebra 2 shouldn't be too hard. Good luck!

P.S. What grade are you in?
