Chance an international Student(India)
Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering
SAT: Math-760, CR-530, Writing-690 (1980 total)
SAT II: Math level 2 760, Chem-700
Toefl ibt: 110/120 (hope it compensates a bit for low CR)
IB Diploma student: Predicted grade: 39/42
Subjects: Math HL, Chem. HL, Bio HL, Physics SL, French & Eng. SL
Rank: 4 in class of 90
Decent ECs (summer internship related to biomedical for 2 years, community service, MUNs, winner of state quizes etc.) and decent Recs.
1 excellent recommendation from outside (internship)
Good Essays

Biomedical Engineering is one of the most difficult majors to get into at UT. I was told only the top 2-3% get in.

Your stats look like a fit, but who knows this year.

AMom2........Thanks a lot for your reply! Please can you let me know how you came to know that BME is a very difficult major to get into? I mean..it is not ranked that highly for BME though it is for overall engineering. I was of the view that engineering applicants are judged for engineering as a whole rather their intended field in engineering...
More responses appreciated...thanx in advance:)

Biomed isn't as hard as you say, but I don't think you will get in. The OOS Sat score isn't good enough. I am not sure how much they take the IBT into consideration, but I doubt it will be enough.

I think that you will get in based off of your excellent major-related scores, and that your TOEFL makes up for a poor CR score. hopefully see you in the fall :)

i got in OOS and only got a 2000 on my SAT's. the subject tests were worse.

^ What major and rank?

When you go on the admission tour they talk about impacted majors. One of the impacted majors they mentioned was BME.

You may have a chance, but with the top 10% last year being over 80%, it's hard to say.

For engineering they really focus on class rank, and to get into BME (which is THE Hardest to get into) you have to be in like the top 1% maybe 2%. I was 13/476 and I did not get in initially.

I'm international. I think you have a pretty good chance from the outlooks.
Class ranking is not that important for internationals, my school doesn't even have a ranking. TOEFL is just to show you are able to understand English.
So, if you can improve your SAT to 2100, it'd be almost impossible for biomed engineering to reject you.

An interesting info I found for internationational students admitted to UT Austin and how they compare to other students:
2007 Average SAT/ACT scores
For Enrolled Students by Applicant Type
Automatically Admitted Texas Students:
SAT Critical Reading & Mathematics: 1219
ACT Composite: 26
Non-top 10% Texas Students:
SAT Critical Reading & Mathematics: 1241
ACT Composite: 26
Out-of-State Students:
SAT 1290 (critical reading & mathematics)
29 (ACT composite)
International Students:
SAT 1215 (critical reading & mathematics)
24 (ACT composite)

The low SAT average for admitted internationals clearly shows that they consider non-native english speakers generally score low on CR sections and thus must be substituting it with TOEFL. However I think that other factors are evaluated equally like those of OOS students and it will be difficult for me to get into Biomed Eng. Even then I don't mind getting admitted with my second choice-general engineering. I also forgot to mention I am not applying for financial Aid and financially capable. This significantly improves my chances, doesn't it?

I don't think there is any international applying financial aid to tell you frankly.
It's almost impossible for international students to be able to get those aid.

Applying for financial aid has no bearing on admissions.
