I'm in 9th grade applying for 10th grade for Exeter and Andover. I applied last year to only Exeter but got rejected....

-SSAT: I'm taking it this saturday. But on my practice tests I've gotten in the low 90 percents and high 80 percents for all 3 subjects.
-FA? Yes
-Essays: Pretty good.
-Recs: Shouldn't be too bad. Nothing a little bribing and blackmailing can't fix. Just kidding!
-Interview: Haven't had one yet, but I know that I should act natural and try to emphasize my strong points.

High School EC's:
-Student council for 4 years (I'm currently freshmen vp)
-Key Club
-Multicultural Club (My sister was the founder and president... All you do is make posters and eat food... But shhhhh nobody needs to know that!)
-Band since 6th grade (I play french horn)

Middle School EC's:
-I used to be treasurer in 8th grade for student council
-I was a member in NJHS for 2 years

Other stuff:
-I'm 100% chinese.
-Last year, I was first chair in the top band for the CCSD Middle School Honor Band
-I can read, speak, and kinda write in chinese
-I've been swimming for about 9 years. I guess you could say I'm pretty good.
-I've had straight A's since Kindergarden
-I was nominated for the American Legion Award
-I have all honors classes
-I probably have a lot of stuff I forgot to put and I can't remember.

I’m going to be honest with you…
You’re chances are OK. What is Key club? Your SGA looks good. But do you do any sports? Any volunteer work? Have you won any awards? Those are the kind of things that make you stick out.

Key club is a community service club… I’m going to be honest, 95% of the people are asian. We also learn about leadership and we have cheers that don’t rhyme… I volunteer in the local library. I’ve won swimming awards, the American legion award, band awards, and many more. I do swimming like I’ve said before.

Why only Exeter and Andover, the toughest schools to get into? Why not Peddie, you
re a swimmer. You stayed another yr in Vegas because you didn
t have a target or safety school.

i’d say that usually, chances of getting as a new lower are pretty easy. andover (i’m not sure about exeter cause I think they like getting athletes for new lowers…??) usually looks for more well-rounded ppl during the lower application process (where as for freshmen they usually look for solely the ppl with the top grades; although int’l asians are usually like mad smart, but you’re not international. so nvm.)

anyhow, I think that you need to do better on your SSATs if you can still retake them one more time. the SSAT for me was a easy 99% percentile… and I think that’s the case for most Andover-bound kids (esp. if you’re asian), but I do know kids who did get in on 80%'s so it’s not the end of the world if you can’t pull up your scores. your EC’s are a little weak but it would be great if in your interview you could really narrow in on your enthusiasm to be part of the community - like REALLY wanting to join varsity swimming or wanting to immerse yourself in the music community

and of course, your grades are the most important. if you’re a straight A student, I think you’re off to good start. and REVISE ESSAYS. i know the essay was really important - cause i got a personal handwritten note in my acceptance letter saying that it was particularly my essay that showed that I was a thoughtful, mature student. :)

i’m not sure how many ppl are from Nevada (I certainly don’t know any here lol) so maybe your area is an area that Andover wants to reach out to - so that could potentially increase your chances.

anyways, good luck to you! and if you get into both, CHOOSE ANDOVER. will be the best decision of your life. haha. like seriously. saturday classes - what? and andover has so many better benefits when you become a senior - eg. better college matriculation. hahaha.

You need to expand your choices beyond Exeter and Andover. “Pretty good” will not get you into these schools. The good news is that if you are looking for a better education than what your public schools are offering there are plenty of other choices out there. Have you considered any of the boarding schools in your region - Fenster, Hockaday, St Stephen’s?
