I was wondering what my chances are of receiving either the full or partial tuition waivers for FSU. Here are some of my stats:
ACT score: 30
Math = 27
Science = 27
Reading = 34
English = 33
Residency: Out of state
GPA: Weighted = 4.59
Unweighted = 3.79
Class Rank: Top 11%
6 AP and mostly honors classes
EC’s:
Varsity Dive
Varsity Tennis
National Honor Society
National Art Honor Society
National Latin Honor Society (Elected Historian)
Latin Club
Ultimate Frisbee Club
Based on last years cutoff, you would qualify for the full OOS waiver - it was a minimum superscore 30 and a WGPA that you appear to be well above for the full waiver, and usually coupled with the $9600 Freshman Scholarship. Unfortunately it is subject to change each year - I’m sure based on the strength of the applicant pool. I have a D in a similar situation and anxiously awaiting Jan 25 decisions.
Same boat here! My daughter is waiting to hear whether she was accepted or not, and if she will receive a waiver. She has a 29 ACT, so unless the pool of applicants has gone down, she won’t receive a FULL waiver.
Has anyone heard if out of state tuition waivers or other scholarships have been mailed out to those accepted to FSU last week? We haven’t heard anything from FSU since the acceptance notification.
thank you. I do not see the link on his letter so he must not have been granted any reduction. He has a 1390 SAT and 4.5 weighted GPA so I’m surprised this would not have qualified for at least for a partial waiver of out of state tuition. I will check in with his FSU counselor to request further information.
@Oreo30 Would you be willing to report back what you learn from admissions? It was stated by someone else that admissions said a 4.0 core weighted gpa plus a 30 ACT (which should translate to a 1340 SAT) should get the full OOS waiver and a 29 ACT the 50% waiver. You are the second person I’ve seen post that had stats better than that but was not offered the OOS waiver. Thanks!
Talked to admissions today. They recalculate based on their core (don’t use pluses or minuses) and your weighted GPA core must be 4.0 with 30 ACT for a waiver. I think 31 for full waiver You can call and they can walk you through. If you are close, they will recalculate with midyear grades. Good luck!
I got the same response from admissions today. My son’s SAT is enough to get him a full waiver but his re-calculated GPA is a very small % lower than needed (4.0) for either the 100% or 50% waiver. We submitted his mid-year grades and hope that will be enough to get him to 4.0. Will be unfortunate if such a small % prevents him from getting any financial help. hope this helps.
Is there any confirmation on SAT scores instead of ACT? My sons GPA is 4.1 and 1360 SAT. He received 50% OOS waiver. Just wondering how close he was to full waiver. Might be worth a phone call
The admissions counselor wasn’t sure if my son’s mid-year grades will get him to 4.0 since they use weighted core calculations. Does anyone know how the weighted core GPA is calculated at FSU? For 1st semester, he got 3 “A’s” and 1 “B” and all four classes were honors level. The B was English and the 3 A’s were Psychology and 2 electives.
@Oreo30 I don’t want to steer you wrong but I believe your core GPA only includes Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Foreign Language classes. So you should be able to count the 3.5 for English and the 4.5 for Psychology (at our high school Psychology is considered Social Studies?) which averages to a 4.0gpa. The question is what are his electives. Are they math/english/science related?
thank you. The elective was a 2-Block Photograph and video course. I didn’t think this would count as core but the admissions person said on Friday it factors in but not as much credit. It is very hard to determine how these schools compute GPA - wish we had more concrete guidance.
This number must have changed as we were told by admissions rep (in email) that it was a 3.5 minimum GPA and 29 or less was partial, over 30 was full. The applications must have spiked - in previous years the minimum GPA was 3.25 for either…
My daughter has the GPA and ACT necessary to receive the out-of-state tuition waiver. FSU also is her No. 1 choice. Problem is, she didn’t apply until late December, so she won’t find out if she got in until late March. So the question is: Is it worth it to call or email the admissions office and let them know that she wants to be a Seminole and, if accepted, will attend FSU? Don’t want to push our luck, but also don’t want to regret not doing all we could later. Thoughts?
