Georgetown University is my top school right now but I have no idea how they pick students (I moved to the U.S. seven years ago so I’m not really too sure about the college application process)
Can you let me know what my chances are for Gtown based on my scores?
SAT I: 2240
SAT Spanish w/ Listening: 740
SAT Math II: 700
SAT French w/ Listening: 800
I have a crummy SAT Chemistry score (<600) as well.
Thanks in advance guys and good luck in the application process.
I have a 3.83 gpa in a very tough high school. The high school does not release class rank however, so I don’t know about that part. All classes are honors. Hopefully that helps. ECs are too long to list atm
If that is your unweighted GPA and you have 10+ AP/IB classes, then you have a shot with those test scores. If that is your weighted GPA or if you have only honors courses and not AP/IB, then you had better have a strong hook or you won’t be accepted. This is only my opinion and I am not in admissions, so put as little or as much value on it as you choose.
Thanks for your input. My school doesn’t offer any AP/IB classes for some reason. As I said before, all those classes are honors courses and the GPA is unweighted on a 4.0 scale. I come from a Jesuit high school that has ties with Georgetown and I think that my essays are pretty good, but that’s just my opinion.
I am the lead flute in the orchestra, a Spanish peer tutor, Junior advisor (someone who helps freshmen in their transition to high school), president of soccer club, CyberPatriot (computer competition) competitor in the Platinum division, 1st place in National Spanish Exam in the state, and lead editor for the French section of our cultural newspaper.
I don’t know if that gives you more information, but hopefully it gives you a better perspective. I’m not trying to brag by the way. I am in no means perfect. I just want to see if I actually have a shot at this school/
@tibrocks I strongly disagree with @Daddio3, mainly because he oversimplifies the admissions process. I know he does this because according to him, I would have been turned down, but I was admitted early action. Gtown looks at applicants holistically. Based on that fact alone, it’s fundamentally untrue that you would need 10+ AP/IB courses with that GPA, since they wouldn’t turn you down immediately for something so trivial. In fact, you and I have identical UW GPAs (and I also attend a well-respected HS). I had 3 APs after junior year and will graduate with 8 (and my school offers almost every AP you can imagine except for Psych) and still got in. Additionally, Gtown will not hold against you that your school does not offer AP/IB, since they know that you’ve taken the most rigorous curriculum offered to you. My personal perspective on the Gtown admissions process is that your transcript and scores get you considered, and the intangibles get you in. I strongly believe this because I know multiple people from my school who applied to Gtown with transcripts that were probably better than mine, but my ECs and essays and interview were all stellar and I’m sure my recs were great, so I was the only one to get in, and I didn’t really have any hooks. Your transcript and scores certainly are strong enough to get you considered, and your ECs are pretty good (but that’s true of most applicants), so what will either tip you over the edge and get you in or keep you out will be your essays, interview, and recs. Georgetown loves students with a passion, and I think mine really came out in my application, which I personally believe played a role in my acceptance. Make sure to put effort into these areas; it really makes a difference.
So, in short: Yes, you have a shot. Your scores and GPA and rigor are good enough to get you considered. Just put effort into your app and show them what you care about. It’ll make all the difference in the world.
@2016senior2020 Thank you so much for this detailed response. You obviously know the process better than me since you were accepted. (congrats btw) All I wanted to know is that I have a shot and it will not be a waste of time to apply to this school. I really want to but I was worried my grades were too low. You have boosted my confidence and now I feel energized to write stellar essays. I cannot thank you enough and I’ll let you know if I get in via PM. Thanks a bunch and happy New Year.
I don’t know if you got your news yet, but I know Georgetown is really looking for passion. If you expressed to them what makes you tick, and you have those great test scores, you have a good chance–but it is a really competitive school. Good luck!
@eiknarf, what do you mean that Georgetown admissions is political when making decisions? What do they favor in applicants with lower credentials? Are you referring to legacies, athletes, URM (aka ‘the usual’), or something else? Please do share your insights…we’d all like to hear
