I’m a rising high school senior, I visited Georgetown and really liked it but I’m not sure if I could get in. Undecided major
SAT: 1490 (780 EBRW, 710 M)*
ACT: 32 composite; 34 E, 29 M, 35 R, 29 S*
GPA: 4.0
SAT IIs: Taking in August
APs:
AP World sophomore year (4)
APUSH + AP Lit and Comp jr year (waiting on scores)
AP Chem, AP European History, and AP Lang senior year
These were the only APs offered in sophomore + junior year, and I could only add 3 for senior year
Ecs:
Varsity soccer (likely captain next year), JV softball, varsity track, National Honor Society, history club, culture clubs, student council (elected class representative)
Around 75 volunteer hours - peer tutoring in school (I’m planning on volunteering this summer and through next year at an animal shelter)
Employment - tutor to 3rd grade boy for 6 months, 2 hours per week
Internship like program at local hospital
I’ve gotten several awards but nothing major.
I spend my summers in Ireland visiting and staying with my family - I’m probably going to write my essay on this.
I’m a first generation American and a first generation college student - I really liked the first generation program at Georgetown.
Teacher Recs: likely going to be very good, I asked my history teacher who I had for three years for global studies, APWH, and APUSH. She knows me very well and has seen me grow over the past 3 yrs and will hopefully write about how I adapted to a challenging class and worked very hard (I know Georgetown likes to see these kinds of recs). I also asked my Trig/Alg II teacher. I was one of the top students in the class. She is also in charge of student council which I have been a part of for three years.
Counselor Rec: likely going to be very good. She is also from Ireland just like my parents and has a good relationship with my family. She likes me very much and I’ve been her first choice when it comes to peer tutoring.
Additional Rec: I’m planning to ask my gym teacher for a recommendation, she went to Georgetown on an athletic scholarship and she also likes me. She has given recommendations for other students in the past and they’ve gotten in.
I also have some questions on the application process: What’s the interview like? Is every applicant interviewed, or do they need to pass a certain round first? What questions are asked during the interview?
Does Georgetown give any merit scholarships at all? Are they generous with financial aid? I’m a white female from an upper middle class family. I don’t know my parents income but they do have several pieces of property, and they’ve told me that this will kill any chances of financial aid. I have two siblings (one of them is my twin) and we will all be in college at the same time. Will this, as well as the fact that I’m first gen American and first gen college student. help?
I’m planning on applying for some Named Undergraduate Georgetown Scholarships - the scholarships donated by others if you meet specific requirements, i.e. if you live in a certain area. There are a few for New York residents that I’m going to apply for, but do you have to qualify for general financial aid through the FAFSA?
*Because of Georgetown’s send all scores policy, I’m going to send my 1490 SAT taken in May and my 1340 SAT taken in March. Will this improvement make my application look good? I’m also going to retake the ACT and aim for a 34/35.
