Chances for Georgetown

Hi there,

So as those of us still in high school/college are making our way into second semester, I’ve been thinking about potential colleges and I wanted to know what your guys thoughts would be on my chances for Georgetown (applying EA next year). I know this perhaps comes off as somewhat too eager, but I just want to know what my realistic goals should be.

Here’s my profile as an applicant-
SAT I- 1530 (790 Math, 740 RW)
SAT II- 800 Math, 720 Chem (Retaking), and will take World History test as well
GPA- 3.8 UW, 4.5 W GPA (I’m from a uber-competitive MA high school that does not rank)
Types of classes I took- All Honors and Advanced (Spanish and Math have an accelerated advanced level for AP track), AP Chemistry, AP US History
Senior AP Classes I will take- AP Calc BC, AP Comp Gov

Honors-
Silver Medalist in Biology Challenge
Semi Finalist for Letters about Literature
Verbal Commendation at two MUNs
Honorable mention at one
Best Delegate twice

ECs-
President of Indian American Club
Chair of Model UN club
Middle school Model UN director
Teen Mentor in local program
Math tutor in local program
Member of Library Advisory Committee
Music tutor in local program
Volunteer at Food Pantry
Piano (4 years)
Vocal (2 years)
Badminton (not competitive)

Summer programs:
Attending Harvard Summer in Summer 2019
Penn Summer 2018
Northwestern Summer 2016

I’ll probably have pretty strong recs because I am super close to two teachers at my school. My essays will probably be about my childhood and how my sister’s disability affected my life and what I will study a Uni.

Thanks guys!

Chancing depends on the school/major you’re applying for. Overall though, you seem to have a pretty well-rounded application and your stats are strong. You’ll have to make it clear why Georgetown and connect what you do with what you want to study, because it’s hard to figure out what you’d major in/be interested in just from looking through your ECs since you’ve got a lot of different things. Language is important, especially for SFS, so make sure you keep taking Spanish

Thanks for your quick response, @masquerade98

I would be applying to Georgetown College (not really considering another of the schools), so does that impact the difficulty of getting in? I would definitely be interested in their interdisciplinary major option (combining gov and bio of global health) because I have an array of interests. I also really like Georgetown because even though I’m not Catholic I really do appreciate the Jesuit traditions and focus on education.

Will keep taking Spanish, thanks!

@ajfromma I think you have everything it takes to get into Georgetown. Remember that it is one of the few schools where it is harder to get in early (11%) so if you get deferred, don’t lose heart. Like masquerade wrote above, the essay will be key … study up on the program you will apply to and connect your experiences to specific classes and professors (by name). That’s what I did in my essays. Also, if the essays are the same as 2018, use your “activities” essay to describe your favorite activity and explain how you will expand on it (with specifics) at Gtown. Good luck.
