Chances for Georgia Tech, UMich, and Wake Forest

3.8 UWGPA, 4.10 WGPA
2100 SAT (590 CR, 800 M, 710 W)
SAT II: 790 Chemistry, 750 Math I, 730 Physics
AP's: Music Theory (4), Chemistry (5), Biology, Physics B, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics

Decent EC's...student tutor, varsity cross country runner, physics team, recreational sports (won a sportsmanship award), National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, French Honors Society

Take mostly honors and AP classes.

Nice upward trend in grades.

I live in NJ and go to a very competitive public HS (top 0.25% of all US high schools)

Top 10% of class.

For GTECH and UMich I applied Engineering, and for WFU I applied for Chemistry

Any thoughts for either school would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

You should get into to at least 2 of those.

You should get in to all of them especially GTECH and Wake Forest. Why Michigan?

I’m not sure about Wake Forest, but that 590 CR will really hurt you for Ga Tech and Michigan. With the switch to the Common App these schools have gotten a lot more competitive -I’ve seen kids with better SATs get waitlisted/rejected from those schools. However, bring your CR up above 650 and you should be fine. This would change based on whether you’re in state or out of state.

I actually got deferred from both Georgia Tech and Michigan so I was pretty disappointed about that, but hopeful I can get in the second time around. I know the 590 CR is going to hurt me, but do you think that will make or break getting accepted to these places? I’ve taken honors English every year in high school and have also improved every year with my grades…B, B+, A-, A (in that order).

UMich would be a reach for oos applying CoE. GPA is below average and SAT is around 25%. Try to bring your CR to 700+ for a better chance.

Your CR will definetly hurt you especially at Wake I think, but you still have a good shot at all three… good luck :)

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1609588-chance-i-ll-chance-back.html#latest

Is the critical reading really going to kill me? I feel like that is truly my only weakness with my application.

No it won’t in my opinion. If you are applying to engineering, they are going to look more at your math school. I think you got deferred because you are OOS.

For UMich over all, the mid 50 SAT is 2030-2250. For CoE, it is around 50-100 points higher. So you are practically right at the 25%. You do need to bring up your CR score to increase your chance. Also, the admission average GPA is 3.9 for CoE. Unless you are in state, otherwise, it is likely a reach for you with both SAT and GPA below average.

Alright. Thanks for the input. I’m just going to hope that the CR score does not kill me. I get my Georgia Tech decision on March 15th, so I’ll see what happens!
