Chances for Getting Admitted?

Simply put, I just want to get a general idea of where I would stand if I decide to apply. I am currently 15 years of age, and will be entering my junior year the coming mid-August.

I've already asked something similar on collegeinfo's post, but I thought that I might as well make a post out of this anyways. Thanks for your thread, collegeinfo1994!

Anyways, here's the list of what I've currently have done thus far/notable things about me:

4.0 GPA both freshmen and sophomore years (there were no AP's available at my school for my first two years. yes, I know, it's terrible.)

Two years of cross country, joining next year as well as senior year.

One year of tennis. Will join for the next two years, possibly a chance for captain my senior year.

Officer positions for 2 clubs next year, probably president for both by the time that I am a senior. Possibly a third one as well.

Four straight years of music - started in middle school, will continue to take orchestra for next two years.

Going to take three AP's next year and four my senior year. Possibly two more during the next summer.

Didn't take SAT's yet, but I'm aiming for around a 2250-ish.

And perhaps my greatest advantage of all: I moved from China to the United States when I was 7. Parents didn't finish High School, family has VERY low income. I will be the first generation in my family to graduate high school, and my ambition was always to strive for the best college out there. Which apparently was Harvard, haha.

I know, I don't have like, 20 AP's or like national awards or anything. But that's how I've always been - starting from scratch and overcoming the odds. I've been through a lot in my past but simply put, I'm just a man with a vision and a dream to succeed. In the end, I might not even get to Harvard. But I will try. As I always have been.

I have many things to say but I won't say it here (yet). I'll just leave it here, and hopefully you guys who have experience at Harvard (or anyone else, for that matter) can help me with my situation.

Any comments, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Try to get some really nice awards if you can. If you are good runner, then really train and try to get some awards in that/become a captain. If you’re a good musician, try ot earn All-State music awards.

I think you’ll get into some Ivies, don’t know about Harvard. Its kind of random.

Also, MIT loves foreign-born poor people. From what I understand Harvard isn’t going to care that you’re poor because you’re Chinese. You’re lumped in with all the other Chinese applicants, while MIT considers “context.” There are so many relatively dumb foreign-born citizens/perm. residents there for some reason. Apply there.

Do you have citizenship/a green card? If not, prospects look kinda dim…

JoonBug812 - Yes, I am a legal citizen.

Stevenwh - From what I’ve seen, I’m not even that sure if I have a chance at ANY of the Ivies. Simply getting accepted into one would already be great, even if it wasn’t Harvard. MIT will definitely be on my mind when I apply to various colleges.

Talking about MIT, how is it there? What majors do you think the people at MIT excel the best in?

Looking at your thread, you seem to have a higher chance than me! I wouldn’t worry, just keep doing what you’re doing- maybe win some awards, like they said. Have you got any volunteer work? Colleges consider that as well.

In that case i feel you have an average/above-average chance… But it’s hard to tell.

I’ve read that Yale has an unofficial policy that they don’t admit kids who won’t turn 17 at sometime during their freshman year. You barely slip under that threshold – I mention this because a hurdle you’ll need to mount is a bias against possible maturity & age issues.

If the applicant is really outstanding, sometimes they will advise them take a gap year and enter later.

Best of luck to you.
