Hello.
I am currently really interested in going to med school, but my current GPA is at a 1.8 and I have 29 credits currently. I transferred to a different university after my freshman year and I ended up doing really poorly at that college. I know that med schools require a 3.5+GPA and I was wondering if I still have a chance to get this GPA up before I am finished with my undergraduate. Ive heard about post bach programs as well. Would staying in my undergraduate studies and continue to get straight As be the best option in order to get the GPA or are my chances ruined because of the year I did poorly in? Should I retake classes that I got C- in?

Thanks

Unfortunately, I think the 1.8 GPA is going to cause you to lose a bunch of your chances of med school.

Really? Theres no way I could get this gpa up?, I still have to take a bunch more credits

Jbwalker, why don’t you post your question after you accomplish your increased GPA in a few years. We will be glad to help you then instead of speculating.

Yeah a 1.8 is extremely low. I’d say your best bet would be to finish undergrad with the highest grades possible (try to get all As from now on) and then re-take the classes that you did so poorly in. You could also enroll in a post-bacc program.

Also remember that grades aren’t the only thing that matter for medical school. MCATs, personal statements, research, community service, and other related experience is also very important. I’ve seen students with a 3.6-3.7 GPA get rejected from med school. It’s very competitive and you really need to show your passion for medicine. Right now it is very early to say, but improving your grades is the first step.

Ok thank you, I will focus on getting As for now!
