Chances for getting into Top Schools (ivy leagues)

I was just wondering with the stats below if I would be able to get into an ivy.

GPA; 3.93 UW, 4.5 Weighted
SAT: 2360
ACT: 36

Achievements:

  1. I came first place at guitar regional competition.
  2. I qualified for USAJMO (math competition, you need to be in the top 0.5% to qualify) in 10th grade.
  3. I qualified for USAMO in 11th grade.
  4. I was a part of National Honors Society and tutored kids since I was in 10th grade.

Thank you for the responses.

It’s difficult to chance ivies because they’re so selective and even extremely qualified students are rejected… your test scores are very strong though?

Qualifying for USAMO is no joke. I remember i completely bombed the AIME good job.

You seem to have clesr strenghts and solid grades/test scores. Nail your essays and get solid teacher reccs and you have a fair shot.

@reelmathematician I made USAMO and solved two problems, and was rejected by Caltech - anything could happen (I didn’t apply to any Ivies though).

However, you haven’t said much about course rigor, EC’s, recommendations, essay quality, subject tests (if any), how much you can afford, etc., and many of these are also often taken into account.

@MITer94 I’m not really doing any sports right now, the only EC I’m doing besides volunteering at NHS is playing guitar. Do you think that’s enough or should I do more for a shot at an ivy? I have taken a total of 4 APs in 9th and 10th grade, and 8 HL classes in 11th and 12th as I am in the International Baccalaureate Program. HLs are equivalent to APs.

that’s enough…don’t underestimate the power of making USAMO, you’re in an incredible position

@reelmathematician In terms of course rigor, as long as you are taking the most challenging courses that you can reasonably take, you should be fine (note that this doesn’t mean take 20 AP’s).

In terms of EC’s, hard to say. Top schools generally don’t want “bookworms,” i.e. students who have excellent grades and scores but not much life outside. But I’m not exactly sure in your case.

I think you are definitely in a good position. Making USAMO is a big accomplishment. I would say have about an 80% chance of making an ivy league.

I don’t think the Ivys care about USAMO . They are looking for a more complete package IMO

^^not sure if the IMO was a pun or not but I assure you, USAMO is very prestigious, only around 300 kids get into it and colleges know that, esp since the number of kids who get into MOSP and IMO is microscopic.

Top Ivies are reaches for everyone. More reachy for some, less reachy for others. I know that is not what you want to hear but it is the truth.

" don’t think the Ivys care about USAMO "

LOL. that has to be sarcasm. Let’s say there are 13.2 million high school students in the US. The top 260 math students in the US qualified to take the USAMO in 2013. Yeah, it’s a big deal.
