Chances for GW (SMPA)!

<p>Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some input on my chances for admission to George Washington and the School of Media and Public Affairs.</p>

<p>GPA: 4.3/5 (weighted)
Rank: 6/460
Public Highschool in Virginia</p>

<p>SATS (I'm worried about these I feel like they're low):
CR: 630
Math:600
W: 660</p>

<p>I'm taking ACTS in a week. Hopefully my score will be higher.</p>

<p>SAT IIs:
US History: 750
Lit: 620</p>

<p>Extracurriculars:
I was a member of the mass communications center in my high school for 3 years.
Varsity Outdoor Track- 3 years. All state team. Varsity Indoor Track- 1 year.
Sideline Cheering- 3 years (1 year Varsity) (1 year captain)
Varsity Competition Cheerleading- 3 years
Yearbook- 2 years, Editor in Chief this year
Beta Club- 2 years
NHS- 1 year
Latin Club- 3 years
National Latin Honor Society/Junior classical league- 2 years
Class Council Member- 3 years. 9th-VP, 10th-Historian, 11th-Historian.
SCA Historian- 1 year </p>

<p>I also held a job for the end of my Junior year-Beginning of this year.</p>

<p>Other:
Student Ambassador(People to People), I traveled to Europe and earned community service hours as well as 1 credit.</p>

<p>Community Service:
Over the summer volunteering at library
I volunteer every other weekend at a humane shelter (9th grade & summer, 12th grade)
I volunteer (started in october) as a tutor once a week</p>

<p>I've had articles published in the local newspaper, and I interned for a local author. I plan on majoring in journalism.</p>

<p>My grades have definitely improved since I was a freshman. I've always taken all honors classes.
Due to specialty center restrictions I have only been able to take certain AP classes:
AP US History (11th)- 4 on the exam if that matters
AP Govt (12th)
AP Lit (12th)
AP Latin Vergil (12th)
My schedule is one of the hardest this year.</p>

<p>Your stats are good enough to get you into a lot of school and GWU is definitely one of them. I’m applying for transfer there next fall.</p>

<p>I think you may not be a strong candidate for SMPA for you are competing against people whith more media/ editing experience, and the number of spots is very limited.

<p>What type of experience, just wondering?
I was in the Mass Communications specialty center at my high school for 3 years and each year involved 3 communications classes I had to take, including Graphic Design (using InDesign/Photoshop, etc.), Print Journalism, advertising campaigns, Video Production (We used AVID to edit) and Broadcast Journalism (we have a production studio), etc. My curriculum was based in these programs even in my English and History classes.</p>

<p>And if not SMPA, do you think I have a shot at GW in general?</p>

<p>Ermime, in your first stats you didn’t write the experience that you are now mentioning. The latter is good enough. You have a shot at least for GW in general. I would recommend an interview to increase your chances. Good Luck!</p>
