uwGPA: 3.91 (all A’s but C+ in Alg 1 in 7th grade, just my luck)
SAT: 1510 (800 math, 710 reading)
ACT: 34
Haven’t taken SAT II yet, might take later on or senior year
AP’s: AP Comp Sci Principles, AP Comp Sci Java, AP Chem, AP Calc, AP Physics, APUSH
Honors: Honors alg 1/2, Honors Chem, Honors Physics, Honors Geometry, Honors Pre Calc, Honors Calc 2 (BC), Honors english 10
All AP tests are 4’s and 5’s, mostly 5’s
EC: Participating in academic games (agloa.com) winning team championships every year since elementary school, DECA, NHS (11), Taken many harvard and MIT comp science classes with certificates showing completion in all of them, Robotics (9-11), Math Club, bilingual (English and Bengali if that counts for anything lol)
Gender: Male
Race: Asian (Bengali)
Hooks: 1st gen student even though that barely helps
Income bracket: around $140-$150k
State: Michigan
Intended Major: Computer Science, as I already said I have taken many harvard and MIT computer science courses already and have the certificates as well as A+'s in all of my high school comp sci classes except one semester of C++, EC’s also slightly suggest interest in Computers/Math
Target schools
-Stanford (very high reach)
-MIT (mid-high teach)
-Harvard (high reach, where I hope to attend)
-Yale (high reach)
-UCB (reach)
-UCLA (reach)
-University of Michigan (Safety)
Since most of the schools on your list are very selective, it’s hard to predict the chances. I think your UW GPA is very high, SAT maybe shoot for 1550+, ACT is decent, course load seems very rigorous, and nice EC’s, especially the Harvard and MIT CS classes. I think you may need a little more leadership in your in-school EC’s; maybe try to be a club officer of DECA, NHS, Math Club, or Robotics?
Also, like you said being bilingual in English and Bengali doesn’t really count for much, and your race is definitely a drawback, but your hook as a 1st gen may help.
I think you have a good chance at most of your reaches if you add a bit more leadership into your EC’s, write a savage essay, and raise your standardized test scores.
I’d appreciate it if you could chance me back! http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/2000649-chance-me-low-rank-common-ecs-cornell-harvard-wharton-etc.html#latest
UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Post Capped weighted and Fully weighted.
Also since you are OOS for UCLA/UCB, your parents are OK with paying $60K/year for you to attend these schools?
Little to no financial aid for OOS students at the UC’s. If the UC’s are affordable, then you look like a competitive applicant for both UCLA/UCB.
Best of luck.
You have a good UW GPA, and you said you received a C in 7th grade, but I don’t think your middle school grades will count, so that would leave you with a perfect 4.0. I assume your W GPA is even more impressive, given your courseload so that is good as well. Your SAT score and ACT scores are pretty decent but if you plan on retaking them (you might want to consider it) you should aim for 1550+ on the SAT and >34 on the ACT. I think your ECs are semi-generic and I’m not sure taking online courses offered by MIT and Harvard count as ECs or have that much value in the admissions process. DECA, NHS, and robotics are pretty commonplace for students interested in CS/Math, so there is not much in your ECs that really stands out. Like I said, I am not sure how much the college classes will help you, but I do think they show your interest in that particular subject area. Academically, you are competitive for all these schools. ECs-wise, you have decent chances at UCB, UCLA, and UMich because they weigh academics more heavily than the rest. For the others, you will have to really ramp up your ECs to have a decent shot of getting in.
Stanford - high reach
MIT - high reach
Harvard - high reach
Yale - high reach
UCB - reach
UCLA - reach
U Mich - target/match
Good luck! I would appreciate it if you could chance me back here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1995754-chance-me-low-gpa-rank-cornell-rice-wash-u-ucla-etc-p1.html Thanks!
@Gumbymom uwUCGPA 4.0, weighted is 4.18 if I only count AP’s
Parents would be fine with paying the tuition as I don’t plan on applying for financial aid at a UC
Your chances are pretty low because your EC’s don’t really stand out too much. I am assuming that you took courses from EDX and / or Coursera. I don’t know if those hold too much weight, but they are always good to take. Colleges do want to see that you have done something with those skills, so try creating an app. Good Luck!
