Chances for Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Williams, Amherst, Princeton, Georgetown or Columbia

Hi, I'm currently finishing up my junior year in high school and planning on applying RD to the following schools next year.

Harvard RD
Dartmouth RD
Williams RD
Amherst RD
Columbia RD
Princeton RD
Georgetown RD
Yale SCEA

I was wondering if anyone could look at my stats and tell me whether or not I have a chance at getting in. I know everyone's chances are pretty slim, but if you could just tell me if I'm on the right track, that would be great.

They’re all reaches unless you’re a recruited athlete.

I would try to narrow that list down and try to find more matches because eight reaches is a lot. I would try and narrow your schools down based on what you want in a school’s setting and whatnot (for example, I don’t see why you would apply to Amherst and Columbia because the two have very little in common.)

I would definitely apply to a few (three/four) reaches if I were you because you’re a competitive applicant, but I would expand your list a little.

thanks for the response. I understand they’re all extremely competitive but do you think any three/four from that list would be fair game or are there any like Yale that are just completely out of reach?

Assuming you score 750+ on 2 more SAT subject tests (Georgetown recommends 3), you should certainly get into some of the schools. As all the schools have a sub-20% acceptance rate, no one here will be able to tell you which schools will admit you.

Im going to give you my honest opinion and say that you will most likely not get into any of these schools. Your SAT is probably slightly below the 50%mark and your GPA is a little low for theses schools. Usually ECs can compensate for this because there are thousands of kids with higher stats, but your ECs are not that spectacular. Are you thinking about trying to run in college? Is there any chance of being a recruited athlete? I think you should apply reaches but maybe you should cut your list down a bit and add more matches and high matches. Best of luck.

I’m not positive how good being all-state in XC is in Connecticut, but if I were you the first thing I would do is contact every coach for every school you are applying to. That would be the single biggest boost in chances you can have right now to get into those schools.

Your stats will be in the lower half of the applicant pool. Unless you are a recruited athlete or you have a hook, chances look slim, but you can always try. Your list inlcudes the most selective schools in the nation, so you might want to add some less selective schools ( non ivy) .

Meanwhile, try to get your SAT up to 2300, and 750 plus on each SAT 2. You will also need excellent essays and letters of recommendation.

Might want to add Cornell and Upenn ( little less selective and bigger schools with more spots, but still very selective) if you are an ivy fan.

Good luck!

You should definitely add some safeties to that list. And also try to get every section of your SAT 700 or above if you want to have a more competitive score. Nothing really stands out, but like others have said, if there is any possibility of being a recruited athlete, your chances definitely improve.

thanks for all the responses. just to clarify, I didn’t mean to say that i’ll be applying to all these schools. I meant I will possibly be applying to some these schools as my reaches. I have ideas of matches and safety schools. Also, I know I don’t really stand out with a hook, but are my stats good enough to at least give me a shot at these schools? I know for almost everyone the chances are slim, but are there any schools on that list I have essentially no chance of getting into rather than just a slim chance?

oh also, I’ve been in contact with both the Amherst and Williams coaches. They both seem interested in having me on their teams. I’ve been hesitant to contact the other schools because they’re DI and have very good teams and I don’t think I’d be good enough to get recruited.

All seem like reaches; best chance in my opinion at Williams and Amherst. I honestly think the admissions at HYPS = Crapshoot. Furthermore, anything may be possible, but it will definitely be hard for acceptance (possibly a weightlist)

I’d say that your a pretty good applicant. Your SAT is a little low (specifically mathwise), and keep in mind that colleges aren’t necessarily looking for well rounded students, but a well rounded class, so if XC is your main activity, make sure that all of them can see it and its impact on your life. Remember tho, these are reach schools for everyone.

Chance me please!

HYPC are very high reaches. Amherst and Williams are maybe a slimmer more likely but also very tough shots.

Georgetown only considers M+R so your strongest section, writing, will not help you there. You have a 1400/1600 which is right in the middle of Georgetown’s class. It’s not going to be easy.

If you go through RD results threads for top schools you’ll find there are many applicants who get straight rejections from top schools. I’d say you have a strong chance of doing just that. Remember adcoms look for “reasons to admit”, and I can’t find any on you that many other applicants don’t also have.

What majors are you interested in? There are great schools out there with more forgiving acceptance rates.

I’m interested in going into Astronomy possibly, or astrophysics.
