Does your HS have good history with Harvard?

What type of math competition awards do you have?

last year we had two people go to harvard.
Harvey Mudd Math Competition

Last year 4 Asian males (3 friends and I) applied to Harvard. Three were from my HS (elite HS) and the other was from nearby HS. We all had 2350+ and 35+ and multiple 800s on SAT IIs and UWGPA 3.96+ (I was the one with 3.96 and three others had 4.0 UWGPA)

One of us had a national recognition and 2400 SAT. I had 2380 SAT and 800-800-(800)-780 SAT II and 35 ACT. I also thought I had decent ECs and decent awards (AIME and regional math contests and community service award etc.) We were also NMF (not a big deal).
On March 30th of 2011, we were shut out from HYPSM, Cal Tech and Columbia while others (Whites and Asian females) made Stanford, Princeton and Columbia and so on.

I am not telling you this to scare you. It is the harsh reality that we Asian males have to face in elite college admissions. Do your best and see what happens. Also, be prepared for some bad news. AND, make sure to apply to many top colleges. In the end you will have many great choices.

Harvard is a reach college for everybody but I hope you make it.
Good luck to you.

Wow man those are great stats but I agree with 20more. Good luck

You have excellent scores and good ECs. Your ECs do lack a little bit of variety and focus, but, nevertheless, they are still pretty solid. Depending on the depth of involvement and the success you have achieved in your “economics” based business, that could be a real boost for you, you should work it into your EC essay if possible. Your internship looks pretty interesting as well, perhaps you could look for a reference there. I think you have a good shot, nail those essays and you might make it.

Care to answer my question? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1247527-how-badly-does-hurt-my-chances-top-schools.html

@20more:
EVERY post I’ve seen you make has in some way or another disparaged someone’s test scores because they were lower than yours and somehow you just happened not to be accepted with scores higher than theirs. Test scores matter, but you don’t have to have a 2380+ to get into HYPS. I’d love to have this guy’s scores, and I’m sure many other applicants, successful or otherwise would have as well.

You’re qualified, but Harvard is unpredictable! Best of luck to you though! :)

I agree with 20more and lexieam, but best of luck to you!

Would you chance me?

could you describe these more? They seem impressive, but without description, it’s hard to asses. Also, you never provided your class rank which is pretty important.

So yeah, you’re an asian male from California. Probably the worst demographic in terms of college admissions. You most likely have passed the academic bar (still questionable w/o class rank). But this hardly means anything for an Asian applying to Harvard. In terms of your musical achievement, there are many other Asians from CA who have probably exceeded you in terms of musical achievement. Obviously it will benefit, but not a whole lot. In terms of athletics, unless you have shown exceptional ability, it’s tough to say that will help your chances a whole lot. But again, possibly some benefit. In terms of math, there are plenty of students from CA who have major math awards which won’t help you stand out. In terms of the other two, can’t say without a description.

In summary, the unhooked asian males who get into Harvard are those with major national awards, or truly amazing accomplishments/special talents. As of now, I don’t see anything that stands out (at least compared to other asian males from Cali), or a clear passion/talent. The rest of the stuff is in your essays & recs, good luck.
