Chances for Harvard??

Hi guys
I'm a senior in high school applying for Fall 2011 admission, and I really like Harvard, but I'm not very sure as to whether or not I'll get in. I might apply ED somewhere else if i don't really have a shot, so what are my chances?

Chances please! Thanks in advance guys!

you have a good chance i think. but can u chance me? lol

i’m hesitant about applying to more ivy league’s even though i want to go there
i’m applying to columbia, cornell, brown as of now and i would like to go to harvard but iono if its a waste of time for me
i have a SAT Of 2200: (taking the ACT)
Donno what my weighted GPA cuz school doesnt do it… i’ve only gotten one B in h.s. i think last year my GPA was a 5.0
8 AP’s- all 5’s except one 4
published in journal of molecular structure and crysengcomm with my research i did in the summer
Extracurriculars: pres environ club, pres quiz bowl, vp for american cancer society, yada yada yada…10 years in choir outside. some more officer positions…

Please don’t tell me to list out my extracurrilars
MY MAIN CONCERN IS MY SAT SCORE!!! Do I have a CHANCE?

hmm…
I have a friend whose cousin is on an admissions at a top school, and he told me that SAT scores were more of a cutoff than an actual thing to be used in admissions (if that makes sense?)
So, what he said that if your SAT score is higher than 2300, you can’t possibly be hurt by it. SAT’s can never help you get into top schools, they merely act as a cutoff.

That said, while your score is 2200, i don’t think it’ll be that bad? if you other extracurriculars are good, and your app looks compelling (essays, recs, etc.) you should have a shot. That’ll make up for it. Besides, you have a good gpa, so that could make up for it. :)

Do note, it’s harvard. A girl from my school came up with a new way to test for cancer through urine (got a 1.5 million grant from UM for it) and got in. Others of less caliber (but still very similar besides that science fair-y stuff) from my school didn’t.

It’s always a crapshoot. But at least you have a shot.

Best of luck bud :)

@ OP: You have a solid shot. Applying clearly isn’t going to be a waste of your time since you stand a chance, so I say go ahead. BTW - you listed the same score breakdown for both your superscore and your highest sitting; was that a typo? Also, even though AP scores are not necessary in the admissions process, what about your US History and English Lit scores?

thanks i was wondering if i should even apply or it would be a waste… but i think i’ll give it a shot… donno what my true ranking is our school ranks with 4.0 unweighted so if you take like all regular classes and get A you’re rank 1… so i got a B and i share rank 30/900 -.-. its either your 1/900 for 4.0 or 30/900 1 B basically … ANYWAYS btw are u doing siemens?

hey everyone on College Confidential, my name is Cornelius. Plz chance me for admittance into Ivy League; I want to go to Harvard!!!1!!

Stats:

4.75 GPA (weighted)

2400 SAT, 36 ACT (both one sitting)

APs- 5’s in Chemistry, Biology, Physics B, Physics C, Calculus BC, English Language, English Literature, Psychology, Environmental Science, World History, U.S. History, Spanish, French, Chinese, Latin, Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics. I could have totally taken Italian also if I had enough room in my schedule >.<

I don’t feel like listing my ECs, but here’s a brief run-down:
-Class Prez, VP, Secretary, and Treasurer all at the same time for 4 years
-Piano: performed at Carnegie Hall 9x, played at White House
-Spent summer in Africa to build houses for the poor; found the cure for AIDS while there
-Internship at Harvard Medical Center
-Volunteered at Soup Kitchen 1000 hours
-3 jobs
-Created 4 clubs at my school, President of 12 others
-Varsity Track, Swimming, and Tennis (captain for all three)
-National Merit Finalist
-Won Intel
-Attended Biology, Physics, and Chemistry Olympiad study camps
-USAMO 3x

I’m kinda nervous right now-should I do more ECs? Improve my GPA??? I’m freaking out!!!

From these posts (when it comes to chances), I all think that you all have a chance at Harvard. Write well-done essays, and show your passion (and what meaning/things you learned from everything). This is the most important thing. (Got in with a 2210, Asian)

hahah @wellurnofun hilarious post…

to the dude who started this thread: you’ll probs get in. Good luck

Did you get in OP?

@bob - he ultimately applied to Dartmouth ED and got in. So even if he chose to apply to Harvard he would have had to withdraw his application once he heard back from Dartmouth.

@wellurnofun i thank you because that post made me laugh out loud for a good 60 seconds.

@nishravi: I am sure you will have decent chances to get into any school of your choice. However, being a Harvard Aspirant, I would like to ask you some questions. 1) How do you get to play for the USTA while still being in high school? How did you work at a Kumon tutoring center for seven years when the legal work age (at least that is what I have been told) is 14?- I assume that you are 17… As for the Cambridge Summer Program, is there an application for it?

Nerd…

Rejected

@HarvardAspirant

1) He probably was ranked as a junior in the USTA system.
2) I am not sure how he worked at Kumon for 7 years. Maybe he meant to say he was a Kumon student for 7 years. At any rate, I think he just listed that he worked for Kumon throughout high school
3) Yes, just Google “Cambridge Summer Program” and all the information you’ll ever need will be there at your disposal.

So now you have to be a nerd to use the term nerd? Or do you expect every “synonym” of your name to be a term of endearment?
