Chances for High SAT / Low GPA Kid?

Thanks in advance...

Hey I ran into some confusion with my rank so but anyway it's much lower than I expected...what are my odds? Also, I was rejected ED from Penn Wharton.

Caucasian Male, California

I split up the ranks b/c our transcript has both and Princeton, Stanford, CMU, and UCs ignore freshman year:
*GPA 9-12: 3.63 UW / 4.03 W
*Rank 9-12: 60/707

*GPA 10-12: 3.79 UW / 4.41 W
*Rank 10-12: 19/707

By grade:
*9th - 3.33 UW / 3.33 W
*10th - 3.60 UW / 4.00 W
*11th - 3.89 UW / 4.56 W
*12th - 4.00 UW / 5.00 W (only student in class to have this)

SATI Composite: 2330 (1600 M+V)
SATII: 800 IIC / 730 US / 700 Lit
AP: Euro 5 / US 5 / Calc AB 5 / Eng. Lang 4
Senior APs: Lit, Gov, Psych, Stats, Calc BC, Macroecon, Microecon (only student in class to have 7 APs)

ECs:

Fundraising is my strong point ($$$ donated generally 1/2 to HS senior class & other 1/2 to help w/ China's orphanages - my family adopted & I am really involved w/ that):
*Ran a golf tournament & silent auction fundraiser. Raised $11,400. 51 golfers, 96 dinner guests. 360 personal volunteer hrs; other volunteers put in another 450.
*Ran a Bowl-A-Thon Fundraiser. Raised $1,600. 160 participants. 80 personal volunteer hrs; other volunteers put in another 90
*Ran a Luncheon Fundraiser. Raised $1,100. 65 lunch guests. 25 personal volunteer hrs.

Also:
*Started a small business at school that sells aids that make graphing easier for students. Made $350 last yr. Not sure about this yr, but profits are going to Hurricane relief.
*Volunteer as an assistant teacher in a program that helps children recently adopted from China keep in touch w/ Chinese language/culture (my family adopted my sister 2 yrs ago). Also started a program to donate a box of essentials to a different orphanage in China each month.
*Cross Country & Track 9th - 11th
*Boys Scouts (Life Scout)
*Math tutor
*Religious School & Service
*Freshman Mentor

Work Experience
*Worked at McDonald's since end of sophomore year (18 months). 13hrs/wk year round
*Peer Tutor 3hrs/wk yr round

Awards (nothing special):
*AP Scholar w/ Honor
*Finalist in ROP Business & Management Program
*Finalist in SoCal Leadership Contest
*"Most Likely to Change the World" - maybe means something in class of 700
*Honor Roll & CSF

Schools:
HYPS
Dartmouth
Brown
Duke
Amherst
Williams
Northwestern
UChicago
Carnegie Mellon
Berkeley (instate)
UCLA (instate)
UCSD (instate)
UCI (instate)

the UC's with a 4.03 and a 2330? I'd think you could get into all of them... definately UCI and UCSD.

Low GPA?? What the **** are you on?

you wont get into many ivies. maybe one of the lower tier ones. they dont like it when you apply to all of them or a lot of them./ you should have applied to two at most in my opinion.

you are also asian which isnt going to help. youre ec's are a little ridiculous. almost like you are trying too hard and they rerally arent that good

how do Ivies know if you apply to all of them?

I agree with jjjj's comment on your ECs.

what do you guys mean by that about my ECs?

I am not Asian...perhaps b/c of all the things with China? I am Caucasian, but my family adopted my sister from China.

Fundraising demonstrates ones ability to get along with others, and to organize. I think that Amherst especially will appreciate this.

As you have mentioned, your rank is not going to do you a lot of good at the really hypercompetitive schools - but the crystal ball is pretty cloudy on them anyway. The important thing is that you have a good spread of schools, and you should have many options come spring.

Your ECs dont really stand out and it seems you are trying too hard to sound impressive. I mean, do you really think an income of $350 is worth mentioning?

You are caucasian, so I guess you know that you still dont qualify for URM benefits.

JJJJ is off the ball there your chances with the ivies are not effected but how many of them you apply to... schools dont pool their resources to find out where you applied lol.

Also your GPA and SAT/ ECs are outstanding you stand an excellent chance

" they dont like it when you apply to all of them or a lot of them./"

That's a myth. The Ivies do not know what colleges that you applied to. The only reason that applying to all or most of the Ivies may hurt a student is that the student is unlikely to be able to differentiate between the Ivies. The student probably just applied to places viewed as prestigious, and probably would not take the time to differentiate their essays or to be able to say during an inteview about why the student applied to a specific college.

Woof...find it hard to believe that you were rejected by Wharton ED. Could be the relatively low overall GPA that did it because all your other stats and your ECs are very, very good. With that said, I think you're a competitive candidate at HYPS - Probably 20% chance of getting accepted at any one of them (that's about twice average). Ditto Amherst, Williams, and Dartmouth. Duke I'd give you a 25% chance. Brown, 30%. Northwestern, 35%. UChicago, 50%. Carnegie Mellon and the UCs, close to 100%.

Overall, my guess is that you'll get into a couple of the Ivies, a couple of the other top schools on your list, CMU, and all the UCs. It'll be a real interesting April.

"Your ECs dont really stand out and it seems you are trying too hard to sound impressive"

I disagree, your EC's are really impressive, because they show your ability to lead and manage people which is not something easily learned. I too put down a small business on my application, so I'd keep that on.

I agree with the above person that you'll get into some of the ivies, some of the LAC's, CMU, and the UC's for sure. Good luck!

This is encouraging that I'm at least still in the game...I thought that GPA/rank would pretty much finish me at all except the UCs.

low gpa will keep you out of HYPS

realistically, youll get into all UCs, Chicago and Carnegie, possibly Amhearst/Williams if your essays and recs are strong.

bob, does the GPA keep my out of Princeton & Stanford? (schools that don't include freshman year) I'm 19/705 (top 3%) for those...

well thats a different story...

no your GPA does not put you out of contention for anywhere

solid chance for sure in all schools, including ivies. great applicant overall.

your GC totally messe dup your rank eh
