So...what do ya'll think? I am interested in Biomedical Engineering or Neuroscience and I have heard that there aren't many Hispanic female applicants interested in those fields, but I'm not sure that will help me much. Thank you so much everybody.

bump (10 chars)

lol the reason no ones replying is this- no one likes a urm

lol jk
work experience is impressive, scores are really good for urm range

Haha PK said it...no one likes a URM. I'm sure you're a nice human being in person but on CC we all are bitter about the URM thing. Oh well. You have great chances by the way. Sigh.

I'm sorry that nobody likes a URM. I understand, though.

esp the ones who really don't feel any of the "restrictions" or "disadvantages" of having a diff. skin color

Amazing stats! Good luck =)

huhh I didn't know Princeton had a Biomedical Engineering major. I thought they didn't?

And I thought neuroscience was only a certificate of proficiency?

Haha, ohhmisszanna you're completely right...I'm sorry, I was talking to my mom about applying to UT-Austin at the same time as I was typing this and since I am applying to BME at UT I just...I don't know, I'm dumb. I meant to say that I am interested in applying to the school of engineering, which probably doesn't have a plethora of Hispanic female applicants.

And as for the disadvantages thing...I've never really been discriminated against directly because I am Mexican but there have been disadvantages, socioeconomically and culturally.

yay UT Austin my "back up" school that will probably become the only school I get accepted to. =)

yeah, my parents are encouraging me to do engineering also.
but meh.
not my thing really.

engineering=boring
lol jk, don't attack me plz

yeah that and it seems hard.
especially for me. if i'm doing pre-med i need to major in something that i not only excel at, but enjoy doing.

but anyway GOOD LUCK with engineering j07!

Haha I'm sure I will change my mind about the engineering thing in like...a week. Last week I was set on doing International Law, just a heads-up that I am supremely indecisive. I'm with you, ohhmisszanna, pre-med is what I want but I can't find something else to major in that can actually get me a job in case I don't end up giong to medical school. Like, if you major in Psychology and then don't get a PhD or a Masters you can't really do much with it, and I'm just worried I'll end up jobless and rejected from any medical school.

But it's really not a big deal since I probably won't get into Princeton anyway!

EXACTLY.
that's what my parents told me-- if you don't make it into med school what will you do with a philosophy major?
and they're right.

BUT if you're not accepted I believe there are other options you can try out for: law, PA school, optometry, etc.

Or at least that's what people tell me.

oh by the way-- don't say you won't be accepted!!! =P

lol u kan become a nurse or pharmacist (yuck~!!!)

is it possible to do an engineering major for premed?

Yeah, it's possible.
Especially with a biomedical engineering or chemical engineering major, you get a lot of your credits out of the way.

No, for nurses and pharmacists that would be inconvenient because they don't get a separate undergrad major.

Yeah well I probably wouldn't end up doing engineering at Princeton anyway...I will pretty much only do Biomedical Engineering if I go to UT because I figure if I have to go there (it's my backup school too) then I might as well take advantage of one of it's top-ranked programs.

Who knows, I mean you can major in English Lit and apply to medical school the same way you can apply to law school with a Biology undergrad degree. I might just put Undecided on the app.

Yeah actually I'm planning on doing Biomed Engineering at UT also!!
For the same reason, pretty much.
Either that or that Plan II Honors thing.
I'm not sure what it is exactly...
But everyone else seems to be doing it ;]

But it seems weird to have that as your major.
It's like, Yes I graduated from UT with a Plan II Honors major...

im thinking of doing humanities major. ill get premed science classes anyway, but i might have more interesting classes this way. ~higher gpa too hopefully?

Hahaha I totally agree, it'd be odd putting it on a resume. Plan II is like liberal arts on crack for smart kids, basically...one of the essay topics is like what kind of book have you read recently with magical realism or something like that. Awesome! But yeah, you can apparently be in Plan II while you do something else also, like Honors Business, although why you would be in both is beyond me. Supposedly if you're in Plan II you're "more than just a number" at UT, so that's good I guess, but I'll probably apply there (like you said, everybody is doing it!) if not BME. There are literally like 100 kids from my high school applying to BME though...but since they do pretty much everything off of class rank and SAT I think I'm OK.

OMG did you see that one essay and it was like
APPLY THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD TO A SITUATION OUTSIDE OF THE LAB
HAHAHHAHAHAHA
It cracked me up.
Yeah supposedly it's like a liberal arts combined with science thing I think...
Very "prestigious."
