Hi, I applied to AU RD and I really like the school but I don’t know if I can afford it- my family can’t really pay our EFC so I need considerable merit aid, so I’m hoping I stand a chance at the Frederick Douglass program. I’m also wondering what my chances are for the honors program and the Global Scholars program since I haven’t been able to find out much about how competitive they are, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Stats:

SATII: 800 Math 1, 800 US History, 750 Lit

This is just a guess. However, I think you will be accepted into the Honors Program with a merit scholarship (Presidential). Cannot tell you about the other programs as I do not have first hand knowledge of them. Good luck!

Your GPA and scores are in line with those of people offered admission to the honors program last year.

I think the Frederick Douglass scholarship has a particular set of criteria having to do with public service, does it not? And a separate application?

The website I found notes the following:

You’ll also have to make your case in several essays

Thanks for your feedback so far @deskpotato: I’m aware that it needs a separate application, I’m finishing that up right now. I’m just asking about my chances because I have no idea what kind of criteria makes the most difference, so I’m hoping people with experience with the program can post with more info.

This is only its third year, so there may not be too much experience to work from.

I know my daughter chose not to apply because she couldn’t make a creditable case that she fit the profile of what they were looking for. You’re probably as good a judge as anyone of whether or not you do.

The other merit scholarships, at least last year and before, are based on the “numbers” only, so your chances at a Presidential Scholarship are very good.

I’m a current honors student and I’ve had friends who have applied to the Frederick Douglass Program one who made it as a finalist but didnt get it … There are different programs within Frederick Douglass there’s the Frederick Douglass Scholar and I think the other one is (but don’t quote me on it) is Scholar with distinction. The regular scholar is what I am and the most you can get is $20,000 with it while the other one pays full. From what I heard from my friend who made it as a finalist is that the program is kind of biased towards those who have been admitted into Ivy Leagues or some of the other “top” schools in the nation. The program tends to give full scholarships to those who have been admitted into Ivy Leagues so that they can “steal” those students… I felt bad for my friend because she was just as qualified for the scholarship but because she applied ED and didn’t apply to any other schools she wasn’t given the scholarship and she was given this reason as mentioned above by someone on the board who determined who receives the full scholarship… Your grades are very competitive but don’t count on the full Federick Douglass scholarship but I will say that American (at times) gives good financial aid ESP if you are a minority my friend basically got a full ride from the school her grades in high school were worse than mine, only by a small difference (we went to the same high school), she isn’t in the honors program either… So my advice would be to wait for your admissions packet and see what happens!

that’s so much for the info! and haha yeah i knew it was competitive so i was never counting on it, just wondering if it was a possibility. how do they know whether or not the applicants got into ivies btw? (starting to wish i had applied to some…i did get into georgetown, do you think that’ll help?)

*one correction: just reread my post and saw the typo, i’m in ab calc not bc in case that makes any difference

I’m guessing that they ask the applicants if they’ve gotten into any other schools… and I would say georgetown would help… But don’t get me wrong I don’t think this is the only factor but according to what a person on the Frederick Douglass board told to my friend is seems like an important one!

Ok hopefully that’ll work, thanks! (also thanks for the info in my last post, not “that’s”). Anyone else know more about these programs?
