Counselor Rec: Great
Teacher Recs: Great

Essay: non-existent, but hopefully great

I think that's about it. Oh and I'm a Chinese instate, brother is alumni

Spend a lot of time, and put a lot of thought into your essays. That seems to be the main thing. Stats do not matter as much surprisingly.

agreed ^. most people applying have similar stats. as long as your essay is outstanding, you should be fine.
also work on your reading SAT. I don’t think UW really takes writing into strong consideration…

Remember that you get to only list (or catagorize) your extra curriculars OR achievements into FIVE slots. You seem to be very well rounded, with great stats, too. Those are definitely a plus. However, Honors will be looking mostly at teacher recommendations (they’ll read the FIRST they receive and trash all the other ones) and essays. Those personal statements basically make or break your application. Good luck and hope to see you in Honors :)

Yet another person from Newport? :)

Echoing the other responses, I think you are competitive, but you need to make yourself stand out from similarly qualified applicants in your personal statement and honors essay. UW does love Newport (I think you guys put the most into my class of 2013), but I’m not sure if that’ll give you a leg up in honors admissions or not.

Side note: I ran cross country and track for skyline for four years, good chances we ran against each other at some point.

thanks everyone!

and @compactrunner, im sure we have, but to a short asian like me, everyone looks the same: tall, skinny, blonde/burnette. haha.

@compactrunner - I don’t think the number of people applying from a certain school gives an applicant a leg up or not. I’d hope to think that the Honors admissions people looks at each individual by what that person has done and has written, as opposed to setting either a quota for each school. You never know though. :)

@cheekboy34 - Again, I think you’re really competitive for the Honors program. Just be sure to put a lot of effort into your personal statements. They change every year, so don’t answer this year’s essay prompts over the summer and hope to use those. Be creative and more importantly, STAND OUT through your writing. You want to give the admissions officers the impression that “WOW! We WANT this student as part of our program to enhance it! We WANT this student because of this uniqueness! Let’s accept this student right away and send out a letter during the first wave (Late January) of admissions to Honors!”

Don’t be afraid to take risks in your essays. They like that.
