Hi!
I'm a girl applying for the Huntsman Program for the 2010 Fall Admissions, and i was wondering if people here can give me a good, honest opinion as to what are my chances. I know for a fact it's basically impossible to get in, but i'm really passionate about pursuing international business. I am most definitly doing early decision.

Also, I heard that going into one's native language for the Huntsman Program is a big no no. Since my native is Mandrian in addictional to the Shanghainese dialect (Wu), i dont know if i should just do Japanese instead.

Thanks SusieBra!
I scheduled a retake of my ACT test this september and i am hoping to at least raise it up by a point or two.

My AP scores, are okay…more 4’s than 5’s tho…but is Penn critical about AP scores when they decide applicants for the Huntsman program?

Oh, and Penn accepts ACT’s instead of SAT’s…so if i just send my ACT score, should i not send my SAT II’s at all? Also, looking at other people’s apps i think its best if i take the Math 2 SAT II. I’m not really certain.

Also, do you know if its better to apply a foreign language that is not your native language when applying for Huntsman?

You have to have taken AP Calc before attending Huntsman, it doesn’t have to be during high school, you can take the college class the summer before freshman year, so make sure that you say on your app you would do that.

YOU’RE SHANGHAINESE? Have you lived there before?

I’m Shanghainese tooooo ^__^Y I lived there from 1st-3rd grade
I’m applying to Huntsman ED too I hope we both get in…? >>;; Though Huntsman admission = super hard >.<

Hmm, I’m applying to Huntsman with Mandarin, even though that’s my native language.

Thanks so much for the AP Calc advice!
OMG! You’re Shanghainese too!? That is super awesome! Not many people in Michigan are Shanghainese so i dont get to talk in Shanghainese here often!

Yea, it would be pretty awesome if we both got in! Yea…Huntsman admission does equal super hard to impossible…>.<

I was born in Shanghai and lived there till first grade…but i go back every other year!:D

hmm…i was thinking of mandarin but i may try Japanese…hmm…

1) it’s totally fine to go with your native language (I’m pretty sure…)
2) Huntsman is a total crapshoot and it’s not about “how qualified you are”…they just look for random things that some people fill and some don’t. so it’s not really possible to chance you, but besides the Ap calc thing (which you need–at least ab)…good luck.

Thanks for your replies everyone!
I am planning to take the SAT II MATH 2 in october…but my main question is…if i raise my ACT score up and just send that…do i need to send my SAT II’s…since it says that UPENN accepts either ACT w/ writing or SAT’s with 2 SAT subject tests.

Thanks scribbler91 for the native language advice + the whole how Huntsman is basically a crapshoot :)

I’d definitely say try taking that SAT II history again and get a higher sat/act score. Also, not sure how significant chinese/japanese club so that may affect the strenght of your ec’s, which are currently okay, but not great. I’d still say you have a chance but currently probably lower than the average crapshoot applicant (who likely has stronger stats/ecs) unless you can write a really passionate essay. So try to work on those scores or more importantly, ecs and spend ALOT of time on that essay :D. I think the dual degree programs are looking for a more specific type of person so fit would probably be much more important than normal.

I don’t want to crush your hopes or anything, but I really don’t see much hope for you getting in. I had slightly higher stats than you and i still got rejected
