Hey guys, I was wondering what you think my chances are for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and other top schools like Dartmouth and Georgetown.

Sex: Male
Ethnicity: Hispanic

Stats:
Rank: Unofficially 3/150 in private Catholic school, no official rank. In last year’s graduating class, about 15 students were accepted to top 20 universities.
GPA: 3.98 UW, toughest possible curriculum
SAT: 2240 (750 CR 710 M 780 W)
SAT IIs: 770 Math Level 2, 720 Lit, 710 Spanish
AP scores: 5 English Lang, 4 US History, 4 Spanish, 2 World History
National Merit Semi-Finalist
National Hispanic Scholar

ECs:
My most notable EC passion is sports management, and I’ve worked for 2 professional sports teams both over the summer and throughout the school year. My other notable ECs
include being the president of my school’s SADD chapter, being
a part of my city’s Mayor’s Youth Corps, and extensive peer mentoring
as a member of multiple clubs.

Summer Programs:
Hardcore Hispanic program at a top 20 university (8% admit rate)

Other:
Recs: Very good
Essays: One very good and personal, one pretty good about sports management
Service: 230 hours (150 required)

Emm, HYP are reaches because you have no ECs that really set you apart. Georgetown is extremely realistic, and with good essays, I think the Ivies are not huge reaches. As a Hispanic, your SAT scores really help set you apart from the crowd.

HYP are a reach for anyone with a GPA below 4.1, even with impressive transcripts. You sound like a great applicant, but none of your achievements would strike an HYP admissions officer as particularly superhuman. These people, you must understand, are looking for absolute perfection.

This is not to say that there are not dozens of elite colleges that would be happy to have you. Schools that I could only dream about must be banging down your door. You could have your pick: Haverford, Bowdoin, Pomona, Georgetown, Swarthmore, Rice, or maybe even Dartmouth and Cornell.

thanks for the input. yea, i figured that HYP are definitely reaches, im just hoping to get lucky somehow with one of the three haha. anyone else?

misspickwickian, are you being sarcastic or something? 4.1UW is impossible.

His academics are great, but ECs are light. What did you do at that “hardcore hispanic summer program”? Overall, I’d say with URM you have a decent shot

wow, 150 hrs req? That’s madness. I did 20 hrs.

To answer Messiah, the program was a week-long Latino Leadership Seminar at Notre Dame. We basically explored the ways in which we could improve the circumstances of American Latinos. If that sounds a little esoteric, that’s because it was most of the time lol. Some of the kids there were insanely smart and many would rank among some of the most qualified CC users. In retrospect, it was likely the most humbling and exciting experience of my life. Thanks for the input btw.

Your scores are impressive and your URM status will help you a lot. If you demonstrate your passion for sports/your other ecs in your essays I don’t see why you wouldn’t be a strong candidate for each school you apply to.
Good luck!

I say you have pretty decent chances to get into at least one of the schools you listed. Your scores, gpa and activities are decent, and your URM helps too. Sports management sounds like a pretty cool EC… =)

shame on you. Only a 4 on the Spanish AP as a Hispanic?!

only kidding. 4’s a great score & you have a decent chance. I know someone who was admitted to Harvard w/ a 2240 so you’re definitely in reach if you write a killer essay.

lol theres actually a very funny story about that 4 that includes a malfunctioning oral section that everyone failed… thanks for the response tho, i appreciate it

You definitely have a strong chance at any of your listed schools. The Ivies aren’t interested in an excessively holistic process for URMs; for the most part they are looking for the URMs with the grades and scores and you’re fine in both areas. Of course, nobody’s safe at HYP and even at the so-called “lower Ivies;” be sure to apply to a few safeties if you haven’t already like Michigan.

Sorry if I didn’t catch this earlier, but what are you interested in academically? Elaborate on this in your application.

Affirmative action is a major hook and your SAT score definitely exceeds that of many other Hispanic applicants. I would predict that you would receive waitlists at HYP if you can show true dedication to your ECs.
