Chances for HYP?

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2230; 720 CR, 710 M, 800 W, 12 essay (2 dates)
[] ACT:33 (35E, 33M, 34R, 30S) 1 date, retaking in 2 days
[] SAT II: 750 chem, 710 USH (retook and hopefully i did better), seeing how math II goes
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/26ish LOLZ
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World history (5), seeing about chem, apush, enviro, lang, and studio art in july
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: ap calc ab, ap gov, ap lit, ap bio, ap studio art 2d
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Brown book award, paintings exhibited in 2 galleries, national art award (ravsak), national merit of some title (219- 203 was cutoff), hopefully ap scholar of some title, NHS, National art honor society
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 1) co-founded an international and domestic organization HOPE, which sends supplies (clothing, bedding, toiletries, etc) to orphans in haiti and (eventually) costa rica. It started in my freshman year with a few drives to collect the stuff and currently has spread to elite private schools across the nation. I brought it into the camp where i work (the color war). Kids brought in supplies for points for their team lol (yay creativity!) and i did the same thing with my school's color war. One of the other founders went to costa rica and is trying to open connections to an orphanage there. But yeah we've collected tons of boxes, enough to fill a shipping container, and it's being sent to Haiti soon by this family we starting talking with. We have a legit website and everything (which im not putting on here, sorry!! haha im paranoid) and yeah. 2) ART ART ART ART ART!! I love art in case you haven't noticed loll. I'm in AP studio art and have had my paintings/drawings exhibited in 2 places and have won a national award, hoping for some more later. I'm the vice president of the national art honor society and gave a presentation on working with acrylic paint. Uh I don't really know what else to say about this haha i'm tired. 3) Fit and Fun, working with kids with special needs teaching them to get active and have good social skills. Every sunday for 4 months at a time at a local community center. I did this cause i have an autistic cousin and I knew how hard it is to have those problems and I kinda wanted to do it for him i guess :) . I couldn't do it this year though cause SAT tutoring is at the same time, but i'm doing it again next year. 4) Yearbook editor in chief, made the entire yearbook for 2 years cause all of the other members dropped out -_____- lol 5) Other smaller things like NHS, Key club editor, operation smile, other clubs that I don't really feel like expanding on at the moment haha
[] Job/Work Experience: Worked at a summer camp where I used to go every summer since 9th grade. I've done a variety of things there from helping in the office (answering phone calls, filing, helping parents, etc) to working with nursery-school aged kids (HARD HARD HARD). Oh and I'm trying to get an internship with my uncle at a business this summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: See extracurricular activities
[] Summer Activities: Summer camp^, SAT Course, Shabbaton committee- working with other students at my school to plan the school's annual vacation
[] Essays: Probably going to write about my mom with MS and my father who passed away and how it affected me and gave me a newfound drive and appreciation for life. I'm planning on using an extended metaphor
[] Teacher Recommendation: 2 AP teachers, us history and enviro- hope both will be really good
[] Counselor Rec: Our school is moronic and they've decided to get a new counselor next year so I'll have to be nice to her I guess LOL
[] Additional Rec: maybe art teacher
[] Interview: idk yet

[/ul]Other[list]
[] State (if domestic applicant): south
[] School Type: private parochial, not very good at all...
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: <$50,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): HOPE?

sorry if this is really bad grammatically, it's late lol. i appreciate all responses and will chance back. thanks and good luck! :)

bumpppp :(

What does bump mean?

it’s just so that your thread gets put at the top so a lot more people will see it haha

One important question; what major are you looking for? It’s hard to give an accurate chance thread without knowing your major, as your high school career’s relevance to it (or lack thereof) can influence your admittance.

Good for the SAT, although I’d prefer to see a 2300+ you’re close enough to the point where it’s only a few questions difference and hopefully the HYP will see it the same. Same for ACT (although it appears better to me, maybe you’d like to send that in?). SAT IIs are also good as well.

ECs are quite good as well - you expanded out but kept a passion and showed strong leadership in each one (especially that HOPE organization - nice one!). Only thing left to say would be to keep up your good work.

Hooks might influence a bit, since you have two of them.

Harvard, Princeton: Mid Reach
Yale: High Reach

One of the better chances I’ve seen in terms of ECs, but I’d recommend working hard on your test scores, as they can make a big difference, especially in your case. 2200 to 2300 might not seem like much, but the holistic difference is tremendous.

Hope I helped!

thanks! i might retake the SAT in october and practice over the summer, i just need to see how my math II score is. and i’m retaking the ACT so hopefully i can get a better score! Just out of curiosity though, why did you list Yale as a high reach and the others as mid reaches?

Hope you can get a better score too!

I’ve seen Yale as being a lot more selective than Harvard or Princeton. If I were asked to all list them in ease to get into (from easiest to hardest):

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

But in reality, let’s face it, they’re all REALLY HARD to get into and I could see someone else easily saying they’re the same. This is just what I’ve seen comparing accepted threads from the three schools. I’ve also noticed Harvard and Princeton being a bit more influenced by hooks. Once more, I reiterate on my point regarding the reality of admissions with these schools.

thank you!! and yeah, i know how impossible it is to get into these schools. i’m applying because it’s like a why not? sort of thing (even though i really love harvard :D). i appreciate your response!

Your scores are around average for these schools, but your SAT CR+M is only 1430 which is a bit low. However, you have already taken SAT twice and Harvard prefers 2 attempts or less. Hopefully you can get better ACT score to increase your chance.

I wouldn’t say you’re a lock for any of these schools but I would think you would get into one I can relate to your application a lot especially with the essay and I think if you don’t get into HYP there will be at least an ivy that will take a chance on you.

@billcsho, but doesn’t Harvard consider writing more than the other sections? This is from the admissions director:

“We have found that the best predictors at Harvard are Advanced Placement tests and International Baccalaureate Exams, closely followed by the College Board subject tests. High school grades are next in predictive power, followed by the SAT and ACT. The writing tests of the SAT and ACT have predictive power similar to the subject tests.” , [Guidance Office: Answers From Harvard’s Dean, Part 2 - NYTimes.com](Guidance Office: Answers From Harvard's Dean, Part 2 - The New York Times)

I would just think that they would focus more on the 2230 than on the 1430. Plus, if I have a 33 ACT, which roughly translates to a range between 1460-1500, then are the scores really that much of an issue anymore? I’ve heard from current students and admissions officers themselves that once you pass the 2200 or 33 mark, scores no longer matter and admissions officers look more at ECs and leadership.

Just a question! I do thank you for your comment though

i think you have an excellent chance! much better than many applicants. you seem extremely intrinsicly motivated with ur international organization. thats very unique and impressive. ur scores are the only flaw that i see but theyre not even a flaw at that. theyre fine to get in. congrats.

Harvard: Low Reach (bc they love community service)
Yale: Reach
Princeton: mid reach

ur app is going to be basically as good as it gets in terms of service tho.

I think you’ll get into one of the schools if you write a killer essay on a community service EC or the essay topic you mentioned. You’re a great candidate, but it’s HYP. I say you should go for it.

Hi diddly123, that is an interesting article. It said the AP tests are the best predictor and yet, AP scores are not submitted for application. In the context, the prediction is actually on the college performance, not admission. So the ACT/SAT writing score may have a better correlation to college success, it does not mean they would put more emphasis on the writing score than the CR+M in the admission process. They may just consider all 3 sections instead of CR+M alone like some other schools. Many schools still look at CR+M only for historical reason. I am a little bit conservative and put the threshold at 1500/2250 for top schools. It matter less after that. Your ACT has nice distribution with every section above 30 (which is the 25%). If you can bring that science score up a couple points, then you will have everything at or above average.
FYI. The mid 50 for CR is 690-800, and 700-790 for M at Harvard (2010-2011 data from Parchment). You can tell your CR & M scores are closer to the low end. If you can past the median in them, you will have 1500+ and you will have a much better chance.

Thank you for the insightful response billcsho! I completely understand. I took an ACT practice test today after no practice since feb and got a 35 (35E,35M,34R,36S) so my fingers are crossed!!!

Great. You are definitely on the right track. Go for it. Good luck.
By the way, your composite SAT and practice ACT scores are the same as my D’s SAT & ACT scores, even same section scores but in different order. She also took SAT twice and ACT once. She will use her ACT score primarily for applications. She is not interested in Ivies though, so she is not competing with you. ;-)
