So what are my chances? How much are my EC's going to tear them down?

I'd say good chances. I mean your grades and tests are perfect. Your ECs look a little weak but I'm sure that if you write great essays and can embellish on your ECs you have a great shot.

It's a shame I'm not going to be able to get Eagle Scout by application time (I will get it though). That would have boosted my EC's quite a bit. But yea, I'm hoping my stats will partly make up for them as well as my recs and essays.

C'mon gimme a post

Stellar grades/rank/SATs. Yeah, the ECs are decent, so you have a good chance. Although, you probably shouldn't put "Who's Who" near the top of your awards - it's just something that a company does to get money and just everyone who pays gets to be in it.

your scores are fantastic and all, but your ECs are on the weak side. So all the Ivies you mentioned are reaches, but if you get the recs and write great essays, chances for a couple of them look good.

If you're Asian...you don't have a chance. I'd still say you'd have to get into at least one of HYPMS. However, you are way too much a generic Asian kid (if you are Asian) for top colleges.

lol I'm a caucasian through and through with Postal worker parents who don't know what standardized tests I have taken. I wish I had known about the research opportunities and summer programs available (my new counseler is pretty ignorant and Fairfield is known for its poor academics by colleges) but w/e, c'est la vie. I have no qualms of doing my biomed and history at OSU, none at all.

I like all the to-be doctors posting. But I could never let my humanities slip away; I'm only going to MIT or Caltech if i get rejected everywhere else and I don't get that many scholarships from other places.

Yeah, in that case (lol, my bad on the Asian thing), you'll probably get into 2-3 out of HYPMS. It's still a crapshoot though. Here's why:

1) Once any student exceeds 2300 on their SAT, they qualify invariably for HYPMS. Anything higher than 2350 is just icing on the cake, but all students with an above 2300 are on equal-footing in terms of HYPMS/Ivies.

2) You are competing against the best of the best, the large majority of whom have top 5/top 5% standing in their schools and >=2300 SATs. At this point, it comes down to ECs. So, naturally, it will be hard for your app to compete against those of some who have similar grades/scores but with better ECs (and there are a lot of these people).

3) One of your faults is that you only have 3 APs under your belt. Though that has never stopped anyone from making it to top colleges, it could hold you down against other applicants. Say, an adcom compares you with a similar applicant with more AP scores, who do you think they'll take?

4) 2007-2008 is going to be a sick year for top college admissions. Everything on the HYPMS level is a complete crapshoot. IMO, no one can judge an applicant with flawless accuracy (even me!). Your best bet is to apply, cross your fingers, and settle with what you get. Judging from your apparent humility (you mentioned OSU as if it's not below yourself), you should have no problem stomaching the results (unlike many Asian kids and their parents).

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Good post pros, but I do have to say that the 3 APs won't matter (I now have 5 but 3 tests with these summer ones done) since that's all my school offers. Only 1 other person in my class took 3 APs; it's achievemant in context (1 of 800...).

I do hope my random 2400 provides a little more than a 2350 but with all the superscoring... thank's for the post though.

I think you have amazing chances!! True, your ECs aren't the strongest, but your academics more than make up for that. In the context of your school, your AP load is fine. Just don't blow the essays and I'm sure you'll get into most of those. Good luck!

you know, i was never quite fond of blondies, but you've given me a new perspective on them. thanks.

Jw, why are his ECs weak?

Harvard: 40% chance
Brown: 75% Chance
Yale: 45% chance
Stanford: 50% chance
Princeton: 40% chance
Dartmouth: 75% chance
University of Pennsylvania: 75% chance
MIT: 65% chance
maybe Caltech: 70% chance
OSU: 100%, likely full ride
BYU: 100%, likely lots of merit money
perhaps Miami University: Ohio: 100% likely lots of merit money

My only suggestion is that you might want to add a more "matchy" school like Northwestern just in case you get really unlucky.

wait, i might be wrong but isn't it a lot easier for kids from the mid-west to get into really good schools?

so if what i think is true actually is true, then i think your location will make up for any (few) weaknesses

your weakness in ECs will hurt most at HYPSM, but you should have a strong chance elsewhere. With some luck, you'll get into 1-2 out of those 5 probably.

why is it easier for kids in the midwest to get in?
