Hi everyone! I'm a junior and I'm applying EA for Harvard next year. Here are my stats:

**Keep in mind, honors is 4.5 and AP is 5.0 on our school scale but they messed all of them up. ill just put them anyway lol

Senior year (prospective)
-AP Government, AP Biology, AP English Literature, AP Studio Art, AP Calculus

english freshman and sophomore years, algebra II sophomore year, chemistry sophomore year, history freshman year

Uhhh extracurriculars
-founded my own organization called HOPE which sends supplies such as clothing, toiletries, bedding, etc. to Latin American countries. We began with an orphanage in Haiti and branched out to Costa Rica this year. It all began after the 2010 earthquake there. Have done many events at school and at the summer camp where I work as a counselor/administrative assistant. We've also started clubs in elite private schools across the country (which send students to Harvard/ivies every year, so they'll be familiar with that). We started working with Feed My Starving Children, a famous organization which is now helping us get our supplies to Latin America. We are meeting with the president of it soon!
-art
-very avid artist
-won several national contests (ex: ravsak - first place)
-some of my paintings are being exhibited right now at a nearby, well-known university
-yearbook editor in chief for 3 years for the whole school
-summer job working as an administrative assistant/counselor
-work with mentally disabled children, teaching them to get active and play sports. i got my friends to do this too (isn't this what they're looking for? like making the people around you better?)
-editor of key club 3 years
-vice president of National art honor society
-varsity tennis team, treasurer of Israel advocacy club, very active NHS member, national spanish honor society, etc other things

hmm thats as much as I can list right now but assuming i write a very strong essay too, what do you think my chances are for EA? Thanks everyone and good luck! :D

What’s your UW GPA?

Btw your EC’s are awesome :)

unweighted is 3.99! and thanks! means so much :)

I think it’s a solid chance you’re ECs seem amazing!!!

Alright your GPA is stellar. Your scores are just above the 25% for these schools. However, your extracurriculars are outstanding. WORK ON YOUR ESSAYS. If you kill those, I think that you have a good shot at HYPS.

thanks! but i was looking on these schools’ websites, and their 25th-75th percentile ranges were 31-35 generally. so wouldn’t i be 50th percentile, or average? which i think is okay because apparently they only use scores to see if you’re in the range? w.e i might do the ACT again lol. i just need science up!!

Well, HYPS are always reaches.
BUT, in your case, with your ECs, and if you write stellar essays, you should get into one of the 4.
If I were you, I’d try to pull that SAT up by 100 though.

Goodluck!

thanks!! are these scores really issues though? like, if i have to take them again, i will, but would it be more important to focus on other things for now? like sat 2s and other stuff?

No they’re good enough.

If you get your Math and Critical Reading scores up to at least 740, write strong, moving essays, and procure well-written recommendation letters, you should be a solid applicant for Harvard.

what if i’m gonna mainly submit the ACT though? would that be good enough? cause that’s more in the low/mid 2200 range. and i have much better english and math scores on that too. ah im sorry for all these questions!! im just so stressed lol

Push your Math and CR by 40 each, so you have a 1500/1600. That would be sufficient. A 33 and a 2200 are around the same range honestly.

Secondly, 2 SAT 2’s with a 750+ in both will be needed.

i hope i can do that! i usually get 780-800 on math on practice tests but during the real thing i always seem to make some REALLY stupid careless mistakes. ill probably do SAT 2s in may and study like crazy for the SAT again in june after APs are all done! thank you so much for your help everyone! much appreciated

King of EC puffery or King of EC’s? I don’t know, but how could someone who has started his/her own charitable organization have time to volunteer as an administrative assistant? Why would the organization be called Hope which is the same base name as so many other charities? Did you start the Charity by yourself or was it a group school project. Isn’t the art contest really a very small secular high school contest? Should it really be considered a national contest? GL with this. Adcoms are experts at sniffing this sort of thing out.

Soso, thank you for your concern. I was an administrative assistant during the summer when I had way more time for everything. The name “hope” just happens to have the same name as many other organizations. I started it with friends but it is independent of our school entirely. The art contest was national, involving many high schools from across the country

As a matter of curiosity, how many non A grades did you get?

@tomatox1

i’ve had all solid As (>94) in every class except for one semester of AP World, in which i got an A-. So pretty much all As!

On a side note, I saw your performance on the January SAT on another thread, and congrats!! I’m jealous lolol

HYPS: low reach

These schools are so competitive that they are always reaches. But your GPA and SAT/ACT scores are very respectable. Your ECs are very impressive. Your chances are about as good as anyone’s and better than most.

You seem like you would be a unique applicant for the HYP pool but I would still try to reach beyond those and apply to some pseudo-ivie schools. Good luck!
