Chances for HYPS

Hi everybody! I am a current senior at a fairly prestigious independent school in Southern CA. I just applied SCEA to Yale, and am considering apply to HPS in the winter. It’d be great if you could chance me for those schools, and I will chance you back! I am also looking for some advice on other schools to apply to that are more likely and/or offer merit scholarships. Below are my credentials.

GPA: 4.0UW, 4.39W

Rank: No official rank, but definitely top 5%

SATs: 2340 (770CR, 800M, 770W)

SAT2s: 780 Math; 750 Chemistry; 740 US History

APs: (My school doesn’t allow students to take AP courses until their junior year) 5 Chemistry; 5 Calculus; 4 US History

Current Classes: 5 APs (Lit, Gov, Calc BC, Spanish and Latin), Economics and Science Research

ECs:
-300+ hrs volunteering mostly at local aquarium
-President, Founder, local chapter anti-human trafficking group
-4yrs Key Club (created recycling program at local elementary school)
-President, Founder club raises money, does presentations to encourage others to fund raise
-3 years theater (act as assistant director, directed and co-wrote a one act play)
-2 yrs Student council (Activities coordinator – planned first profitable prom in years; Vice President)
-4yrs Varsity Basketball (lots of awards like MVP, captain)
-3yrs Varsity Softball (league champions)
-3yrs Gay Straight Alliance (Treasurer 2yrs)
-4yrs (President 12th) club that supports self-sufficiency among women in 3rd world countries
-4yrs Tutor (various subjects, mostly math, sciences and languages)

Awards:
-Intel Research Grant Recipient (for current research)
-National Latin Exam (3yrs Summa cum Laude)
-National Merit Commended
-AP Scholar
-Science Fair Awards

I have also completed 2 research projects and am starting my third right now. I have a fair amount of awards from those, but I never published in a journal or went to Intel.

My essays are pretty good/great. My recommendations will be great (one is even from a teacher who graduated Yale Divinity School). I am not sure if it makes any difference, but I am hard of hearing and I travel about an hour each way to and from school.

I suppose I am mostly worried that I don’t have that great “hook”, if you will, for schools like HYPS. Do all the littler things I’ve done add up to enough or should I scratch HPS?
Thanks for your help!

To be honest, you have some of the best credentials I have seen on this site. I really don’t think you will have an issue getting into any school you want. Good Luck, Chance Me?

Thank you, that is really kind of you!

I agree, you have some of the most legitimate ECs I’ve seen on this site, and your academics are obviously within the range of those colleges. Not sure if Intel science grant and the Intel competition are the same thing, but I don’t think it matters. I’m sure you’ll end up at a very prestigious college. I’d be surprised if Yale SCEA didn’t take you.

Chance me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1022976-chancelot-stanford-ea-2.html</a></p>

^Agreed. If you write great essays I am almost certain you will get into at least one of HYPS because your EC’s look really unique. What did you write your essays for Yale on?

Chance back please!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025542-yale-scea-er-can-i-get-into-columbia-rd-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks for the encouragement everybody! The Intel grant is sponsored by Intel, but it isn’t the same as Intel International Science Fair. My essays are about my inspiration for my humanitarian work and how I view my future.

you stand a very good chance

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1022392-chance-me-stanford-ea-one-last-time.html</a></p>

Imo you get into at least one. You have an exceptionally good shot at all 4. Best of luck!

STRONG ec’s and nice transcript to back it up but you cannot really say for sure

Harvard reach
Princeton reach
Yale reach (applying early will sig. help your chances. I think you have a good shot here)
Stanford reach

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025831-chance-me-please-ill-chance-back-thanks-guys.html</a></p>

What can I say you have impressive statistics HYPS though are truly crapshoots but I would say Low Reaches for all in the worst case scenario… thanks for chancing me!

It’s true you don’t have a “hook”, but you have an overall excellens app with great stats and ECs. So maybe you don’t have a direkt hook, but you seem to be a very caring and generous applicant. With this in mind I will be shocked if you don’t get accepted to at least one of HYPS. :)

Please Chance back!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1023241-chance-hot-swede-wharton-other-b-schools-2.html#post1065834208</a></p>

Dont scratch applying for them. If you have a 10% chance for each then in total you have a 40% chance which is a very good chance, at the very least. Basically a coin flip at the least. But as far as I’ve seen/heard, HYPS applicants, with exception of select group, have similar selectivity index type stuff and it can just be a random process. good luck!

Thanks for the help guys! I was also hoping to get some advice on schools where I might be able to get some merit money. Anyone know of any others besides U of Chicago?
