Hmm raise the CR just a bit to get it in range (about 30-40 points). If you don't go into the BME program I think you have a pretty good chance. Make your essays good. Oh and about those Top 25% awards... to tell you the truth they arn't exactly the Best awards..

yeah I agree with Gyros321. Cayley and Pascal Math contests by Waterloo U. right? Almost every kid in our grade took it, and MANY got the little national top 25% Certificate>>> Not a big deal, but you could certainly mention if you are going into the pre-med/science/engineering field. good luck:)

i'm applying to economics (so social sciences.)

thanks for the responses. I can't decide whether or not to standby for tommorows SATs. This would be my last chance to write the SAT Is as I am doing IIs in December. How much would I need to raise CR to, in order to stand a significantly better chance?

get about.. hmm i would say 650 - 680. It also depends on from where you are applying. Say if you are applying from Montana. You have much better chances than someone from california because of geographical residency. But I dont know about Canada..

As for geographic advantage, I doubt that JHU would give in for someone from Toronto, the largest and most urban region in Canada. You'd have a much better chance if you are from... say a rural community in Northern Quebec. In general, anyone applying from Canada reserves neither geographic advantage, nor any sign of cultural diversity, because we all know that Canada's long been culturally conquered by her southern neighbor. Canadian kids watch the same nightly TV programs as their american counterparts does (The Daily Show, Oprah, Family Guy, Stephen Colbert, and South Park), eat the same type of cereals, and blow their noses with the same type of Kleenex tissue which you'd be able to find in the living room of every other American family; PLUS Canadians have the same American English accent. The majority of the Canadians couldn't even understand why they have to get passports in order to travel down to the U.S. in first place. Now that's no diversity.

In what way does JH consider culture? I am Pakistani and have lived in the UK, Pakistan, United States + travelled all over the world. Should i focus on that in my essays, or do they primarily consider where you live?

Thanks

If you spent your childhood in Pakistan, certainly elaborate on that. Describe in detail how you lived in that place and how you interacted with the people there. It can prove to be a very interesting narrative story/personal statement.

thanks very much for the tip. This summer I also worked there, and found the experience to be quite different than working on Canada (which I have also done.) I elaborated on that quite a bit, so hopefully the university will appreicate that :)

Just to respond to this discussion about a geographic advantage -- it does not exist at Hopkins. We receive a national applicant pool, so the standards are not lessened to admit students from specific states or regions. So no it is not easier to get in from Montana or North Dakota, versus California or Maryland. Sorry it doesn't work that way.
