Hey guys! I'm going to be a senior this year and I really want to go to Michigan State, but my parents are forcing me to apply to Michigan, even though I have no desire to attend if admitted. I'm guessing that I don't have much of a shot. I was wondering if you guys could chance me anyways. I go to a large public school in Michigan

GPA: 3.63
ACT: 27
EC's: 3 years varsity hockey, 2 years National Honor Society with over 50 volunteer hours.
I've taken several advanced courses, honors courses and one AP course.
I have a really good letter of recommendation from one of my English teachers.

Thanks!

Yeah, you probably don’t unless you’re a URM. Both GPA and ACT are too low.

Here’s a link to another “chance” post. My response (#4 in the thread) has some links to data that shows you where your stats stand vis-a-vis freshman admits, plus the evaluation sheet UM uses to evaluate freshman.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1208583-chance-me-31-act-3-4-gpa-state.html

An ACT of 27 is within UM’s “middle 50%” of admits and 26.4% of the freshman class had GPAs between 3.5 and 3.74, so you’re in range. Also keep in mind that not all GPAs are created equal. Also, to increase your chances, apply “early decision” (before 11/1). You’ll get a response by 12/23 and if you’re not admitted this will give you more time to apply some place else.

Aside from your chances, here’s some unsolicited advice; if you really think you’ll be happier at MSU then go to MSU. I’ve spent quite a bit of time on both campuses and they both have distinctive “feels” and personalities. You can get a good education at both schools. Like most big state schools the opportunities are there for any student that wants to take the initiative. Don’t make a decision to please other people. Do what you think is right for you.

Good luck!

Yeah I’m like 95% sure that I want to go to State, and not because I don’t think I’ll get into Michigan. I really like the atmosphere at State. To me, it feels a lot more laid back and not as competitive. I prefer the large campus and how green it is. I also like James Madison College at Michigan State. It’s a residential college focused on public policy, and I feel that it suits my needs perfectly.

The other 5% is that I may go to UM-Dearborn since it would be A LOT cheaper.
