Chances for inter-UC transfer (UCR to UC__)

Hey! I'm going to be a 2nd year at UCR, and transferring has sometimes been a topic on my mind. I'm still not too sure if I really want to do it, mainly because it would be very hard for me to leave every one, make new friends, and start over. But Riverside bores me a lot, and I really want to go somewhere that is at least an easy bike ride to the beach, and in a more desirable location. Even then, if I don't go somewhere else, it won't be the end of the world, and I really wouldn't mind staying at UCR if that's the way things go.

I'm considering the following UCs:

UCI (definitely applying here)
UCLA (it's a longshot, but I might apply)
UCSB (Location is prime, but it's not in an urban area, so still a maybe)
UCSC (not sure about SC, because I prefer to stay in SoCal)
UCSD (Now a definite along with UCI: I'm on vacation in San Diego right now and I'm LOVING it. Turning down SDSU was a mistake :p)

Stats:

GPA: 2.924
72 units completed (AP credit helped)
Major: Public Policy-changing to Political Science next year; will apply as a Poli Sci major.

ECs:

Honors program: I don't know if I want to mention this on the application, since I got dismissed because I couldn't maintain the minimum GPA.
Campus Safety Escort Service: last year volunteered 2 hours a week, and next year I will be a co-coordinator, helping to run the service. It's a paid job.
CALPIRG: will be a State Board member next year, I will attend quarterly meetings in LA.
Residence Halls Association: I was a senator for my hall last year and I plan to continue next year.

I know I don't have a stellar GPA, but I'm hoping my ECs show I'm taking an active role with my college life. I know being at a UC will hurt my chances, but what are my chances anyway?

Thanks for all the help!

I transferred from UCR to UCSD for fall 08 and I'll tell you that it isn't easy, both academically and emotionally. Once I got accepted and made my choice to transfer, knowing that I had to leave my friends depressed me for a couple days. I even made a friend cry. But I know that this separation would come at the end of senior year, but for me it was just two years early. And it's not like I can't talk/see my friends. I'm still going to drive to Riverside and meet up with my friends when I can.

The most horrifying part of the transfer process is keeping up with your grades. You will need to work hard sophomore year, especially if you want in UCLA. I've been around the forums and I read that you need all B's your Spring quarter, so make sure you don't kill yourself with stupidly difficult classes (I did). I didn't apply to UCLA because UCSD was quite a reach for me already. If you are admitted to any UC as a transfer, you'll have a provisional contract to meet, which is the all B's for spring at UCLA I mentioned above. But for any UC transfer, you basically you can't get D's or F's, and your GPA can't fall more than a few points (< .5?)

I can say that you're not a shoe-in anywhere unless you bring your GPA up to a 3.0 or more, then you might have a better chance at SC, SB, UCI. Right now your chances at UCLA and SD are slim unless you bring up your GPA a lot more and add some more EC's as well.

If you want to transfer, then you should go for it. Yeah it sucks to leave people, but's its in your best interests.

Don't mention the honors program. If anything, it'll make you look bad b/c you couldn't handle their expectations.

Try to explain why you have such a low GPA. If it doesn't go up, you can expect to get rejected. However, they take into account the fact you're at UCR which is more academically rigorous than a community college.

But still, raise your GPA.

What would be a good GPA range for each campus? All I need to know is how much I need to work my ass off next year to get accepted.

Yeah I’d also like to know that last question

come on, guys…

answer: as high as you can possibly get it.

this “what’s the lowest acceptable range” mentality is probably what’s kept you out of those schools in the first place.

take as many easy transferable classes at a community college in the summer to boost your gpa.

Step up your GPA and your chances when you apply should be greater in the Fall.

so did you transfer in the end? i am just wondering because i am thinking of transferring too. i am also a ucr student and am going into my second year.

SoCalKid8807, so did you end up transferring to another UC? I applied to a few UC’s for Fall 2011 and got accepted to only UCR as a junior stat… Does anyone know if I’ll get in to other UC’s if I attend UCR for a year and transfter out? Btw, my units exceed 120-130 so couldn’t/will not be able to apply to UCLA, UCSD, UCSB… my options are slim but UCI would be my top/ideal choice. Any suggestions/thoughts would be appreciated.
