chances for international student?

Asian country (not China, Korea, HK, or Singapore)
Applying for Engineering

We don't compute for GPA, but...

Average: 93.5-94.5~
Rank: 10/230 (top 4%)

AP/Honors: school has a grand total of 2 honors/year (math and science) and I'm in both; self-studying for AP Bio

Courses:

English I II III IV
Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus (for honors math we had Calculus Integrated Sciences, Bio, Chem, Physics
my country's history, Asian History, World History, World Religions
2 foreign languages

-took some accredited online classes
-Fluent in 3 languages, learning my 4th (Italian self-study)
-Lots of community service (13+ hrs/week throughout the school year)

Chances? My EC's are kind of weak esp since I don't have awards. I do have some leadership positions though.

what are the 3 languages?

English, Chinese (mandarin, cantonese, another dialect), my country’s native tongue

^ That’s only two languages, and every chinese can do that.

^You’d have to be from Cantonese speaking region to be able to speak it as well as Mandarin.

Yeah because the 3 languages are really important. If you don’t speak the right 3 languages UMich will reject you. Maybe if you had picked a different one things would have turned out differently, but you will definitely be rejected.

By the way, that’s entirely sarcastic…

Anyway, were you actually counting Mandarin and Cantonese as 2 different languages (I don’t know anything about either, so I don’t know the difference), or were you saying the third was your country’s mother tongue which you’re trying to keep secret?

As for getting in… I don’t know. How well have you learned calculus from your science courses? Would you be able to take either the AB or BC test (and if so which one?) or would you have to take a pure calculus course here starting with 115? I feel like your extensive language and history background may make you a better match for LSA (as well as the fact that it’s easier to get into).

I don’t think they like to admit a lot of people into engineering without any calculus class. And those who they do are probably mostly from poor schools instate.

tentai, as much as some people claim cantonese as an “official” language of china, I really don’t view it as legit as mandarin. so afterall, OP only speaks 2 langs. There’s no edge to that, at all.
