Chances for IR major...

Alright I'm applying to...
-Princeton
-Columbia
-Stanford
-Georgetown
-Johns Hopkins
-Tufts
-George Washington
-UC Davis (in state)

White male
GPA-4.00 UW

I go to an all-boys Catholic school in San Francisco, CA.

AP Courses-World History(5), European History(5), Environmental Science(5), English Language(4), next year English Literature, US History, Calculus, US Gov't, maybe AP Spanish

Have taken 3 years of Spanish (I know I should take 4, but it conflicts with my schedule)

My school only has like 3-4 "honors" classes, so AP's will really be the only classes weighted.

SAT-2190 (800M/700CR/690W)-Very high compared to School's average

SAT II's-Will take in September (lots of pressure, I know)

Rank-1/178

EC's
-Basketball all 4 years (captain this year, starter junior and senior year, we won our section last year, and should do even better this year)
-Founder/President of school's European-American Club
-NHS
-CSF
-100 hours of community service at an adult day care center and tutoring elementary school kids
-Worked at various basketball camps during summers
-Currently learning French on my own
(I know my EC's are pretty weak, but I gotta have a life)

So what are my chances at the above schools? Are there any other schools I should look at? Are there any really good IR schools in Cali? Stanford is a big reach, so I'd like to know if there were a school that I could go to in Cali that would allow me to major in IR. Ty in advance.

Akajjred:

UCD: Safety

lol you gotta tell me about the European-American club.

Alanstewart-Well, since my school is only 20% white (20% Filipino, 20% Asian, 20% Hispanic, 10% black, 5% Arab, 5% other), I decided to start a European-American Club. There was already a club for all the other races mentioned, so I said why shouldn't there be a "white" club. We obviously couldn't call it that, so we decided to make it a serious club that celebrates our European heritage. The 2 biggest days for us at school are Columbus Day and St. Patrick's Day. It's pretty sick. It was a lot of work and I had to go through a bunch of ******** to get it started though.

Flopsy-Thanks, I would hope so. I wish UCLA had IR as a major option. Does anybody know of a different major (that is offered at either of these) that would lead to similar careers?

Bumpty bump

Come On, Plz

Political Science

Your scores and GPA put you withing range of all of your schools, but none of them are close to a sure thing except Davis. The UCs only require one application; why don't you just check the boxes for UCSD, UCLA, and Cal so you can have some realistic match schools?

Isn't UCSD supposed to be very good for int'l relations?

Collegeboard.com says they don't even offer it, but they could be wrong. They have been before.

They are a very good school for International Relations. A lot of their students do it and their graduate program is pretty well-established. Collegeboard is stupid. :) They actually have a bunch of options, (sub-majors? focuses?) under the IR and Poli Sci programs that you can chose as your major...I know b/c I did this on my UC app. And I would go with Eleanor Roosevelt for the college at SD b/c that's where the international house is...:)

IR...Claremont is pretty good. Berkeley also has the International Studies major...I don't know the difference.

Oh, okay thanks. San Diego sounds AWESOME!!!!

Just so you're aware, while Princeton doesn't directly offer an IR major, it has a separate school (The Woodrow Wilson School...) that you apply to after your sophomore year. You can either major in or get a certificate (basically a minor) in Woody Woo, but the former isn't guaranteed.

Yea, I know that sucks. The only reasons I would go to Princeton would be if I really liked it when I visit there AND they gave me a really good financial aid package.

Anybody else actually got any chances for me?

why is berkeley not on your list?

1) I live in the Bay Area and I really don't like the Berkeley campus.
2) It doesn't offer IR as a major

JHU-match (10)

The only other top schools I can think of that have good IR programs (both under their "Government" majors) are Harvard and Cornell. Your stats say you have chances at both of these.

Alright thank you, does anybody have my chances at the other schools...so far we've only got UCD and JHU. TY.
