University of Virginia
USC
UMichigan - Ann Arbor

If it makes any difference, I've been accepted to the U of MN (and its honors college) with multiple scholarships.

Btw, I did a chance thread back in March, but a LOT has changed since then… including my choices for the early round.

Oh, and I WILL CHANCE BACK if you want me to!

I guess I’ll bump… you don’t have to chance me for all the schools!

The objective side of your application is wonderful, but you could be considered over represented because of the fact you’re an asian male. Also, varsity table tennis? whaaat? That’s awesome

Yale (SCEA): high match
Columbia: Match
UChicago: Slight reach
Duke: Match
Dartmouth: Match
Johns Hopkins:Low reach
Northwestern: Low reach
WUSTL: Low reach
Brown: Low reach/Match
Vanderbilt: Match
University of Virginia: Low match
USC: Match
UMichigan - Ann Arbor: Safety

when someone looks at your application, they just see a stereotypical asian boy who does the same thing everyone else does (soccer, quiz bowl, sci oly, etc). There’s nothing substantial here that distinguishes yourself. think about that first

Yale (SCEA): very high reach
Columbia: high reach
UChicago: reach
Duke: high reach
Dartmouth: high reach
Johns Hopkins: high match
Northwestern: Low reach/reach
WUSTL: Low reach
Brown: high reach
Vanderbilt: Match
University of Virginia: low match
USC: Match
UMichigan - Ann Arbor: low match

You should elaborate more on the research. It’s one of the more unique things from other Asian guys.

Yale (SCEA)- reach
Columbia-low reach
UChicago-reach
Duke-low reach
Dartmouth-low reach
Johns Hopkins-low reach
Northwestern-high match
WUSTL-high match
Brown-low reach
Vanderbilt-high match
University of Virginia- high match
USC- match
UMichigan - Ann Arbor- match

@reddr0p‌ Thanks for the chance! Haha yeah our school is pretty big, so we’ve got teams for everything…
@alfawarlord Yeah I know. Everything I’ve done is pretty much what the stereotypical try hard asian boy does… maybe even less. I am hoping I can distinguish myself through the essays.
@rango141 Can’t tell if you are being sarcastic? lol.
@kimdy0‌ Thank you for the chance!

Yale: low reach
Columbia: low reach
UChicago: low reach
Duke: high match
Dartmouth: low reach
Johns Hopkins: high match
Northwestern: high match
WUSTL: high match
Brown: high match
Vanderbilt: high Match
University of Virginia: Low match
USC: Match
UMichigan - Ann Arbor: match

I have no idea what these people are thinking with their ratings.

But in my opinion this is what I see. ACT score is good, slightly above average for these schools. Your GPA is below average, and your ECs are slightly above average. Given the class you are competing with (Asian men), and all things considered, I would rate your chances for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, etc… as reach. Anyone who says otherwise is pretty much blind. There is nothing on this application that I see that would make you special. You would need to be extremely special to make your chances a match for any of these schools.

For the other schools, it’s pretty straightforward and obvious. The lesser ivies such as dartmouth is a low reach I would even say high match as from my experience with my friends Dartmouth is pretty easy to get into. Schools such as Johns Hopkins is a high match. The rest such such as USC are mid to low matches.

This is just my opinion, as biased as it may be, but from my perspective what I have stated is pretty obvious and objective unless I missed something in the 20 seconds I spent reading what you have provided.

For the top schools, your unweighted GPA could potentially be a sticking point, but it sounds like you were mostly taking honors/AP classes, and have done extremely well on the APs, so perhaps course rigor and AP results will counteract your relatively low grades.

I agree that you are in an over represented demographic in the applicant pool - there will be many other students with similar qualifications applying to these schools, and they have to chose someone.

I’m sure you will get into some great schools, no one can predict which ones. The acceptance history for students with similar GPAs and scores at your school will probably be the best predictor.

Your uwGPA is a little bit low. For top Ivies, they are still reaches. Lower Ivies and Northwestern would be low reach.
UMich LSA should be a high match. Your uwGPA is below their admission average.

Yale (SCEA)/UChicago/Columbia - Reach
Duke/Dartmouth/Brown/Vanderbilt/Northwestern - Low Reach
Johns Hopkins/WUSTL - High Match
UVA/USC/UMichigan - Match

I totally agree with Bailkun. I was wondering why your GPA wasn’t much higher with that # of APs, Also, I would like to have seen a lot more leadership roles. President of a couple of clubs like NHS or Beta etc.

@eastcoastplease2015‌ Thank you for the chance!
@Bailkun‌ I think you’re basically saying what alfawarlord said… and I think you’re right. I’m hoping I can maybe get into a top school, but they are all crapshoots (considering the fact nothing in my application is particularly outstanding). I was more interested in seeing chances for some of the lower Ivies and schools like Johns Hopkins and WUSTL.
@BldrDad‌ @billcsho‌ I’m hoping my APs make up for my rather low UW gpa. I don’t think very many people take more than 20 AP courses in their HS career. My GPA has been going through an upward trend since sophomore year, so maybe this is positive? Also, my weighted GPA is rather strong… puts me in the top percentile of my huge class.
@pink997‌ Thanks for the chance!
@ZBD5421‌ Leadership is rather hard to get at my school because it is so large; I assume you will say this isn’t an excuse, and I guess you are right. I think it’s a bit too hard to get certain leadership positions that depend entirely on popularity or connections (e.g. NHS at my school is pretty much run like this… contributing to the reason why it is a complete joke), and there’s only so much influence I can have in the activities I participate in. I am technically “President and Founder” of my chess club lol… thanks for the input though :P

This application looks very strong. You have great standardized testing and AP courses. You have a decent chance at any of these schools.

Please chance on my last post!

Your course rigor would definitely compensate your uwGPA. So don’t worry about that.
