Chances for Ivies

Hi! Just started this cuz I want to see my chances from a worldly perspective:
I’m a senior; some schools I’m applying to are Northwestern, all the Ivies, Tufts, Vanderbilt, etc. I already got into Michigan EA and got deferred early decision from Brown. I was wondering what you think my chances are for some of these schools (possible, reach, unlikely), and what my weaknesses/strengths??
I go to a boarding school
GPA: 3.83 unweighted (out of 4.0)
GPA weighted: 4.1
I took 6 AP’s by end of senior year (my school doesn’t offer as many AP’s cuz it’s a boarding school- we cannot take any our freshman or senior year; got 5’s and 4’s
I’m Korean American, but US Citizen with US residency in New York
SAT: 1510/1600 (NOT superscored)
I’m the president of Amnesty International Club and Awareness of Chinese Environment Club, I won the school community service award, am a Peer Counselor, won Silver Key in regional Scholastics Writing Contest for 2 short stories (2 awards); wrote a research paper that recently got published in 2 academic journals (one of which is American Physical Society), have attained the Global Studies Certificate at my school, do tutoring and mentoring (day care) on weekends and play Girls Soccer (JV captain),came in first place for Regional and State National History Day Group Documentary in 2014 and qualified for nationals (runoffs). I also participated in Yale young Global Scholars and Brown precollege Programs Summer of 2016

sorry wanted to add I’m a female (don’t know if that helps :stuck_out_tongue: )

Like every other Ivy applicant, you’re definitely qualified. You’ll probably get accepted to at least one Ivy. But work on those essays!

Agreed. Your incredibly competitive and will get accepted into at least one Ivy. What stands out most is your American Physical Society publication. It demonstrates intellectual vitality.

also I meant we can’t take ap’s freshman and SOPHOMORE year

I think you have a good chance at Vandy and at a couple of the Ivy Leagues, if your essays match what the schools are looking for. Your publications and summer programs are definitely a plus.

Good chance at Vandy, Northwestern, Tufts, and Cornell. The other Ivies are reaches.

update: rejected from emory (confused) and NW, accepted to UVA and BC Honors, and waitlisted at Amherst

Your SAT will get you through the door at most places. Your ECs seem like they range from impressive for top schools (i.e. published research, History Day nationals) to common (babysitting, Silver Key, even Amnesty International, I believe), so it’s hard for me to gauge. I am also inclined to believe (based on what I’ve seen/read) that summer programs are largely money-makers for the schools & don’t improve your chances of admissions much. I heard this with regard to Brown, though I believe YYGS may be a bit more impressive. Average GPA for your school accepted to these places would help because you don’t provide any indication of rank.

Tufts: Accept
Vanderbilt: Waitlist/Reject

Your SAT and published work should be enough to get you in to most places. Getting into the hardest ives might be more of a stretch just because your GPA although good isn’t brilliant. But overall you have a very good chance of getting in to most places on your list. Hope all goes well!

P.S. I hate to sound needy but chance me back?

@writergirl0316 Hey, thanks for the response! most of the “common” stuff is in-school, since I like being involved on a more local level as well (easier for someone in boarding school). I think precollege for brown helped me just so I could get the vibe, and kinda helped me with my essay (more personal feel) but ofc I got deferred ED. thank you so much for your response, I’m really glad.

The average GPA accepted at my school for ivies is about 3.72 for all ivies-- all in the 3.7 range (again, boarding school) I chanced back!

@ryanroos Chanced back! Yeah all ivies are a crapshoot for everyone :stuck_out_tongue: just wanted to see if I was ‘in the range’… thanks again!! @hehaotim thank you for your response! VERY surprised and flattered with your Yale prediction (I secretly am obsessed w Yale after my experience there, but always doubted my chances). I chanced back!

I think your ECs are solid (your research publications are especially incredible!) and your test scores and GPA are enough for Ivy standards. I think some schools such as Brown, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Cornell, etc. might accept you, but I don’t know about HYP. Good luck!

Oh- I’m also an OP ED columnist for climate change in an op ed online forum and have been since end of junior year
it is student created by some YYGS students all over the world (originally meant to unite differences and boundaries by combining interests and creative writing), but has expanded to do things such as host political live streams, online policy debates, etc. I think this EC is important for me just because I enjoy both enviro (climate change) and writing and this opportunity allowed me to blend the two, even if I didn’t get national recognition or anything

Tufts: Accept
Vanderbilt: Accept
Brown: Accept
Penn: WL
Cornell: Waitlist/Accept
Dartmouth: idk
Harvard: Reject
Yale: Reject
Princeton: Reject
Columbia: WL/ Accept

update: accepted to Georgetown!!

Congratulations! That is a great school and great location!
