Hey fellow ivy-league hopefuls, I applied to Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Duke (1st choice), Carnegie Mellon, and Yale RD, I intend on achieving a biomedical engineering degree.
I have a 4.0 GPA UW and I'm salutatorian of my class of about 500. I'm black (moved from Nigeria at age 5). My sat scores are as follows:
Math- 720
Verbal- 650
And my SAT II
Math lvl 1- 670
US history- 730
Biology- 750
ACT composite: 30
Teacher and guidance recs are good I suppose, didn't get to see them.
Essays were solid
EC: I'm captian of my soccer team, president of math honor society and VP of NHS. Also a member of various other clubs such as science honor society, environmental club, sophmore and junior steering, I have about 150+ hours of community service.
Any help, suggestions, inputs will be appreciated. I will chance back.

Also Im not sure which test scores I should send, ACT or SAT? what do you guys think?

I took The SAT Math2 and I felt that i did A LOT better than I did on the math 1 (I felt terrible that day) so im expecting a 730+ when that score comes in

You have a really impressive resume! Your grades and ECs are really impressive, especially considering you’re leadership, as well. Your SAT scores seem to be the lowest point on your application, but they’re still really good, too. I can definitely see you at Duke and JHU. Cornell and Yale will probably be the hardest, but I see no reason you wouldn’t get in there, too.

You won’t get in for Bio Engineering at JHU. I know you’re have a URM hook, but bioE at JHU is the best program in the nation. It’s extremely competitive and your test scores aren’t that laudable.

Much depends upon how much weight each school or program gives to your possible URM status. If not considered a URM, then the above poster may be correct about the specific program at JHU. Regardless, your recs & entire application will determine your success at these schools since your posted qualifications will be similiar to many other applicants at these most selective schools.

SwedishM8, would my chances increase if I applied to JHU with a different engineering in mind, say mechanical? I’m not 100% on which engineering discipline I want to study so I wouldn’t mind switching

Send in your SAT scores, though if possible retake them (as they seem to be the lowest part of your resume). However I think you have a good chance at Cornell and Duke, the others being reaches.

I’d look up the SAT - ACT conversion table and assess from there. And yeah if Math is your thing then you definitely want a 700+ on one of the subject tests. That said, it’s all in context - if people at your school are regularly getting 2200+ on the SAT and 750+ on various subject tests, then you’re a much harder sell. But if you come from a fairly typical high school, where the average SAT is somewhere below 1800, then i think you’re fine. BioE at JHU is a tough sell for anyone, so don’t count on it. Cornell and Duke you should be able to get in. Yale is a reach. I think you can get into Carnegie, and that’s where the URM portion of your application would definitely come into play given the relatively homogeneous nature of Carnegie Mellon’s student body

Honestly you have a very good application, but as do many people applying to these schools you could for sure get into carnegie mellon. But the others are a game of chance and the person who reads your application. Sorry know really way to give definitive answer. Best of luck. You do have a good shot though.

First of all, congrats on not being born in the US and still obtaining such good verbal skills. What school at Cornell are you applying to? They are really big on fit and you don’t have outstanding ECs in one area so that may be a reach but I think you could have a good shot at engineering there.

Johns Hopkins- Reach
Cornell- Reach to High Reach (depending on school)
Duke- Low Reach
Carnegie Mellon- High Match
Yale- Reach (as it is for anyone)

Johns Hopkins- high Reach
Cornell- Reach
Duke- low reach
Carnegie Mellon- Match (carnegie mellon loves diversity! and i think you would fit there very well)
Yale- Reach
