Chances for JHU ED

I am a current Junior planning to apply to JHU ED for BME. If I don’t get into BME, I still want to go to JHU because of its research opportunities, but I would prefer BME.

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2270 (CR: 670, Math: 800, Writing: 800); I will take it again in fall of 2015 to get 2300+

SAT II: Will take Bio M, Math II, Chemistry, and Physics (Predicted score: high 700, if not 800)

GPA (out of 4.0): 3.97/4.54 weighted

Rank: top 1% (out of 600)

AP (place score in parenthesis): Calculus BC (5), AP European History (4) (AP Chem was a 3 because I took the late test, but I won’t send them that score; it was also because I was having difficulty going from 0 to 3 APs, but in my junior year, I am almost certain I will get a 5 on each one of my AP exams)

AP Classes taken: AP Chemistry (Student of the quarter), AP Calculus AB/BC (as a sophmore, student of the quarter), AP Euro

Current Course load (Junior year): APUSH, AP Lang, AP Physics 1 (Student of the quarter), AP Biology (Student of the quarter), AP Psychology, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations

Senior Year Course Load: AP Govt. and Econ., AP Physics C, AP Spanish, AP Lit, Health, Foods, AP Human Geography (No math because the next course I can take would be at the Graduate level, and I can’t really go to grad school before undergrad)

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Science Olympiad San Diego Regionals 3rd Place overall (10th in state), American Math Competition distinction/top 1%, Math Counts San Diego Regionals 2nd Place, top 25 awards, AP Scholar, NSHSS member, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Students Award of Excellence, Congressional Recognition for Academic Excellence, We The People Competition 4th Place, Ojai tennis Tournament selection, 1st team all CBL, CIF tennis semi-finalist and finalist, CBL singles finalist

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Desi(Indian) Club (President), Compact Careers Club (VP), Cultures for Youth Club, Philosophy Club (President and co-founder), RHS Science Olympiad Team (founder and captain), Marching Band Drumline, Tennis (4 years varisty; Most improved 2 years in a row), USTA Ranked Tennis Athlete, NSHSS, organize annual Desi Club cultural festival and teach dance and acting to all members

Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hrs, EscorT at Loma Linda Hospital, Hematology Research Lab Volunteer, Behavioral Medicine Center Volunteer

Research: I have applied to about 12 different internship programs for the summer. If I get accepted into anyone of the, I will be working one-on-one with a professor and researcher for about 8-10 weeks as a paid intern in biomedical research. At the end of the internship, I will present my work at a research symposium and will also be given credit for the research if it is ever published.

Other:
• State: California
• School Type: Public
• Ethnicity: Asian Indian
• Gender: Male
• Income Bracket: 100,000-115,000
• Hooks (URM, first-generation college, etc.): First Generation Immigrant

Sorry for the lengthy post. Thanks in advance for any comments!

Wow, you are SET. You’re ridiculously qualified, and since Johns Hopkins has an ED acceptance rate of 33%, you have a great shot, although you never know what will happen.

Yeah you are 100% in.

Asian Indian will hurt your chances. Although it is great, your math isn’t the highest undergrad nor even all of the classes you need. You haven’t even taken any analysis, topology, number theory, or abstract algebra courses. You’ve even ignored highschool classes like statistics/probability theory(which, by the way, is required for BME at just about any school and definitely at JHU)… Sitting out a year on math when there are classes to take just looks bad. Also, why double up on physics? You could have just taken Physics C.

Some really good ECs, such as AMC top 1% and tennis, but some of the things like desi club and volunteering at a hospital are very very common.

I’m sure you’ve heard it a thousand times but, great test scores, great course rigor, great grades;however, BME is the most competitive major at an already competitive university. It is comparable to Georgetown’s SFS or NYU Stern. In my opinion, you’re a very strong applicant but just above average for BME at JHU.

P.S. You already know exactly what you’re doing with your summer reasearch? You don’t know if you’ll even find anything much less symposium worthy.

Thank you @SternBusiness and @Nflpackers96

Thank you so much for your comment @YoungShoppah. I am taking Physics C next year is because it is the first time my school is offering it. Also, its physics with calculus, which is a part of the BME course requirement. I actually agree with your comment about my math. Which two courses would be smart for me to do as a prospective BME candidate: Number Theory, Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Topology, and Probability and Statistics? What else can i do to go from above average to really great?

I would say you’re definitely in at JHU. Applying anywhere else?

duke - Accepted
brown - Accepted
ucla - Accepted

Thank you! Good luck with your admissions @appgodxoxo‌

btw you shouldnt mention mathcounts in your app at all since it was middle school and just at regionals.

I’d say that stat/biostat and topology would be your way to go for bme
