Chances for JHU

Well I live in Texas and I would really like to be an electrical engineer or something along those lines. I am in the top 5% of my class (30 out of 607). I got a 4.0 gpa (not A+'s.. just A's). I took 12 AP's with 4's and 5's on all. I received a 2180 on my SATI (760/670/750) (m/cr/wr), which was the highest in my class(not sure if that helps!). I work about 18-24 hours a week at the local grocery store. I have 40 or so hours of volunteer work. My ecs aren't great.. NHS, NM commended, YoungRepub.. How good are my chances at JHU?

I’m in the same boat as you. Plan on attending JHU for medical studies and am from Texas as well. I’m also worrying about not making it even though I’m involved in certain things (track, peer mentor, NHS, and another organization) and am also in the top 5% (16 out of 557) but haven’t taken my SAT yet. I volunteer but not so often and have lost track of my hours. So far it looks good for you. Have you taken any leadership roles within those organizations?

You took 12 AP’s?

Is it your dream school too?

Johns Hopkins receives applications from thousands of people academically qualified to attend their university. At this point, it’s a matter of what you do outside of school, and that’s what’s going to separate you. From what I’ve gathered, I see:

Work
Volunteering
NHS, NM Commended (although just about everybody who applies to JHU has this…)
Young Republicans

I don’t see much at all, unless you have a very significant role in any of the listed… I think that you’ll be among the most academically accomplished students who apply to JHU, but there’s no substance behind it… you’re going to need to kill it with essays and recs.

To LPJohn- Yes… whist, psych, elang, APUSH, stat, calbc, phyc, chem, bio, gov, eco., elit… although 8 of those i have yet to take the ap test for… And yes, JHU is right up there with Rice in regard to where I really dream of going
To Tenors- Yes, I realize that… but since I work so much I don’t have much time to do outside activities… i played JV basketball one year, and I competed at the UIL district level in current issues… does that better my ec’s any?
And also, would you recommend against teacher recs? If so, then what might be a good source for recs?

Good, solid all around stats. I think you have a good shot as long as your essays and recs are convincing.

Chance back
