Chances for JHU?

Hello there, I was wondering what would my chances be for John's Hopkins University.

SAT - 2230 (700r, 770m, 760w)
GPA- 3.62/4 UW, 4.54/5 W
36/780 class rank
SAT II - 800 MathII, 780 Chemistry, 770 US History

Awards: AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Semi-finalist, Multiple small awards from my school (only come from school, not too big, though I have ~7-10 of them)

EC's:
In school:
Mathletics (9-12, captain from 11 onwards, took 1st all but 11th, took 2nd for that year, 12th is virtually guaranteed 1st since he have enough points to literally not show up to the final meet and still win)
Young Engineers (10-12, treasurer from 11 onwards, cut 10th, came in 4th 11th, 12th projected to be 2nd, maybe even 1st if the 1st team implodes on E&M as they did last year)
Programming Club (11-12, co-founder, current VP, working to get a nationally viable Algebra 1 teaching program, expected to be complete by late April)
As to sports, I don't have any in-school, but I do compete in NASTAR for skiing, and I just missed states twice, in 10th and 11th (12th I couldn't compete due to family crisis)

Essay: Wrote about having lost my grandfather and his want for me to continue in Math for the first one, everyone who read it said it should be left as is in terms of quality; talked about my ability in Chess and my want to be on the team in the second.
Recs: teachers all loved me, and counselor I felt might have raved about my ability a bit.

Other: I participated in the founding of a cultural exchange program in which I was a treasurer (between US and China), and got an intern under my Uncle in a business in China. I'm also a Male Chinese (this will hurt me, how much is the question).

So, how do I stand?

You have an okay GPA, good EC’s and a great SAT score. I would say you have as good of a shot as most applicants do. I think your essay sounds good as well. Being Chinese will not hurt you as much as you think. Best of luck too you. I think you will get in.

Chance me please, especially for UIUC.

^ Thanks for the opinion! Anyone else?

If you can write great essays you have a great shot; your SAT and SATIIs are great, as is your rank. Really nice couple of ECs as well.

You have good scores and decent ECs, but JHU is an enormously tough school to get into and your ECs don’t stand out too much from the crowd of extremely qualified applicants. Your GPA is also really going to hurt you. I’d say JHU is a reach.

Actually, being Chinese hurts you a lot. I know you don’t want to hear that, but that’s the reality. These elite institutions want “diversity” in their student body so they can shove their statistics in the face of many, saying “HEY LOOK WE HAVE 20% Asians and 15% Blacks! WE’RE NOT RACIST!” even though they actually are being racist when doing this.

You have a very good chance for an applicant, but the ethnicity thing really hurts you (not as much as being outright declined without a second look) but you will most likely be waitlisted, with a decent chance of being accepted.

I hope you get accepted though! There’s still hope!

@fullofwonder Thanks for the input! I have absolutely no clue as to my essay level, at least in view of the admissions council (:$).

@xquiksilverx Yeah, I figured in the application my EC’s weren’t fantastic (nor is my GPA, though a VERY strong upward trend in the latter case), though might it help if someone with slightly lower stats than me got in? (He was not an ORM though, he was caucasian) Thank you for your honesty either way, however.

@AceAites It looks like my suspicions were correct. :frowning: Oh well, I can only simply wait for the results! And thanks for the input!
