Chances for Johns Hopkins Early Decision? Will chance back!

Johns Hopkins is my dream school and my number one. I'm an avid lover of science and the scientific method and there is, without a debt, no better school than JHU for the beautiful endeavor that is science, and I wish very much to attend. I am currently a 2nd semester Junior, so I have a bit of time left to polish my application. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I come from a competitive I.B. World School in Texas

I plan on applying as a Physics major with an emphasis in astrophysics and take a pre-med route

Profile:

GPA Unweighted: 3.8
GPA Weighted: 4.4
Rank: Top 15% for sure, Top 10% Likely
Curriculum: I.B. Diploma Candidate (most rigorous)

I take IB Biology SL and IB Chemistry SL simultaneously and am doing well in both, planning to take both at Higher Level, as well as Calc AB (Math SL) and other challenging classes

PSAT: 219 and 99th percentile (most likely National Merit)
SAT: Have not taken but based on my performance on the PSAT and practice tests I predict a 2200+ (Usually 770-800 on both reading and writing and 680-750 on math)
Planning on taking Math 1 and Bio M Subject Tests (700+)

Recs:
Guidance counselor
Bio teacher - has taught me 3 years (freshmen, junior, and will teach me senior year)
NHS Sponsor - is sponsor and has taught me 2 years (freshman, sophomore) in Mandarin Chinese

Background:

Arab-American. Father was Iraqi.
Money is definitely tight but my mother works to support the family

Extra-Curriculars:

I'm worried about my EC's. I am very involved in all of them but they are not that numerous.

National Honor Society (member, applied for officership)
Pre-Med Club (Founder & President; sponsor is an OB/GYN)
Key Club
Robotics - Have gone to competitions
Mu Alpha Theta (officer)
Young Libertarians (officer)
Theatre (our school has a production company)
Writing - I write short stories, essays, et cetera, and publish in the school paper

I am avidly involved in theatre; have had major support roles and I love it, it is my second interest after science.

Volunteer:

This is one thing I am worried about.

Dog shelter - 50+ hours
Hospital - 30+ hours
Museum - 30+ hours

I feel good overall about my app EXCEPT for one thing: during the late eighth grade/first semester freshman period my family was going through a particularly rough patch and I was unable to keep up with my responsibilities for JROTC (no longer in it) and got an F.

Aside from that everything else is an A, but that single F worries me. Do you think the university will understand if I explain the circumstance?

Thanks for chancing me!

Certainly apply. And don’t worry, a friend of mine has had a somehow a similar problem, but it was no trouble.

Don’t be worried about not having enough extracurriculars. Depth over breadth. You don’t need a huge quantity of extracurriculars; being seriously good or committed in one or two areas is worth the same or more as being casually proficient or involved in many spread-out areas.

If you want to polish your creative-writer cred, might I suggest: If you’re worried about extracurriculars, might I suggest: apply for the Scholastic Art & Writing awards the fall of your senior year; apply to well-regarded creative writing summer programs (research on CC; there are a few threads about this); submit to literary magazines that are specifically geared towards teenagers or accept both teen and adult submissions (or, you know, go and submit at a serious litmag and see how you fare).

Your grades definitely make you competitive for JHU.

I think you have a good shot of getting in … though nothing for certain :)

Okay, so your GPA is not great but it’s fine. Your rank is not great. You should take math 2 instead of math 1. You should try to score a 2250+ on SAT. Your EC’s are average. Only thing that’s decent is the pre-med club (congratz). Try to write nice essays. You are an average applicant. You might get in. Good luck.

I think you can do it if you work hard. The test scores, if you get what you say, should help. And I wouldn’t worry about that ONE F a few years ago, most schools would much rather see junior and senior year. I think you can get in. Good luck.
