Chances for Johns Hopkins?

Can someone please chance me for Johns Hopkins? Thanks!

ACT: 33 (math 31, English 35, reading 34, science 33)
Haven't taken SAT

4.0 GPA

4 on AP Bio test freshman year, 5 on AP Statistics test last year, taking AP Chem this year

Interested in neuroscience, particularly cognitive and physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy and autism.

Interested in research, but hoping to become a pediatric neurosurgeon or neurologist

Volunteer at local hospital, special olympics, and peer tutored special needs students.

Involved in church and other community activities

Have an after school job working the after school daycare center at my school.

Hopefully next year I will be going on a humanitarian trip to Belize to build elementary schools, and if that works out it will be on my application.

You’re quite a strong applicant! Your interest in pediatrics and the tie-in with daycare job could be helpful in showing that you have pursued you interests. I think that Johns Hopkins is probably a match for you, particularly with your very good ACT score. If it’s a reach, a low one.

You seem to be a great applicant but your course rigor is lacking (unless your school doesn’t offer many to begin with). Other than that, you look to be a competitive applicant.
JHU: high match

Hello there! I want to clarify that I’m only in high school and what I’ll tell you right now is based on what I heard after attending numerous college fairs and admissions conventions. I’d say after completion of your freshman and sophomore years, what you’ve done certainly is not bad. I would think it would be beneficial to try to pull up your ACT a little higher because you do not seem to have much research experience even thought you are interested in neuroscience. Try to find a lab internship focusing on neurology at a facility near you and shadow some neurologists if possible. Take the SAT II tests for at least 2 sciences and a math course (I recommend Chem, Physics, and Math II because you took AP bio in your freshman year and it might be hard to try to remember all those facts). Also, establish great relationships with your counselors and the teachers you’d like to write your recs. Try to do some more leadership in school. If you are driven, I see no reason why you cannot succeed.

Chance me back please?

I should add that I am in my school’s 2-year honors program which is extremely rigorous. You have to take a total of 4 AP classes throughout high school, have 75 hours of community service, take a series of 6 difficult trimester-long classes, and write a 20-page dissertation of a topic of your choice at the end of senior year. :)

And AP classes at my school are very difficult, so taking even one is at least an extra hour of homework and studying everyday.

If that’s true, colleges will see that and then they will rank you amongst your peers. Keep your class rank at at least the top 10%. You could also do the science Olympiads (Bio, Chem, Physics)

Oh I forgot to put that in, I did that and Quick Recall (quiz team) last year. I am one of the SO team captains this year.

What ranking for the Olympiad? Did you represent the national team? Semifinalist?

Please chance me back

No, we only got to state. We weren’t very good…

I think you’re wrong on a lot of your points:

“I would think it would be beneficial to try to pull up your ACT a little higher because you do not seem to have much research experience even thought you are interested in neuroscience.”

Raising the ACT score is independent of research experience, which most applicants don’t even have. The OP’s ACT is within the mid 50% of JHU. While it may not be high enough to be really competitive for a coveted scholarship, it is still a very good ACT score for any top institution.

“Try to find a lab internship focusing on neurology at a facility near you and shadow some neurologists if possible.”

The OP is applying to college. not medical school. Shadowing a neurologist at this stage of life really has little meaning, with no true background in neuroscience.

“Take the SAT II tests for at least 2 sciences and a math course”

JHU does not require SAT subject tests.

Herein lies the problem- a high school student trying to give advice without having any experience or understanding the true nature of college admissions. I am not an expert, but as a parent I think that students need to know that there are no absolutes in the college admissions process. There is no secret recipe for admission to a highly selective school.

I think SAT subject tests would be helpful, but are not necessary. Your ACT is good and right in their range. And the fact that you have a specific interest will be beneficial for you. If you can demonstrate that interest on your application that would be even better. Like some sort of experience with what you’re interested in. I mean beyond working with special needs students. Your ECs are average, but not amazing. You’ll be an average applicant and definitely be competitive! You have a shot! Good luck with applying! I would say it is a high match for you, mainly because nothing stands out in your application. Good luck!
