Chances for Junior Applying to Business

I'm a junior applying in-state for business next year.

-4.3-4.4 weighted gpa by end of junior year
-3.75-3.85 unweighted (upward trend)
-32 ACT (35 english, 33 math, 29 reading, 31 science, 9 writing)
-school doesn't do class rank, but i would guess top 10% or 15% (very competitive suburban public high school, north of chicago)

-3 year staff member of newspaper, will be editor-in-chief next year. This is a huge part of my high school career, I'll probably write my essay about it.
-4 years on mens volleyball, captain of freshman and sophomore team, varsity captain senior year (most likely)
-4 years of club volleyball during off-season
-Spanish NHS board member sophomore and junior year
-Peer Group Leader (small group activities with freshmen every day)

-basically zero legit volunteer hours
-zero legit work experience (trying to find summer jobs as we speak)

i'm kind of nervous about getting in because my friend just told me you need a 4.5 WGPA and at least a 33 ACT to get into business. im not sure if i believe him, i've heard of much worse stats getting in (29 ACT, sub 4 gpa). but who knows if that was a special case. he suggested that i apply to general studies and then transfer to business after freshman year. what do you guys think?

I got in with similar stats earlier this year. However, I had tons of business extracurriculars and an extremely solid internship. I had a friend who had a 30 ACT and a 3.8 GPA who originally got deffered, but eventually got into the College of Business. I think he got deferred because he took only fairly challenging classes and not the most difficult ones. How difficult is your courseload? If you’re going to graduate with 6+ APs I’d say you’ll definitely get in. I am also north of Chicago so I have a good idea what type of kids are getting in from around here.

No, you don’t have to have a 4.5/33. Your ACT is very good; your class rank may be a bit low if your guess is correct as to what it is but not low enough to avoid applying to business. Nevertheless, be aware: (a) business is the hardest to get into, accepting only about 40% of applicants to it; (b) more than any other college your stats are not determinative–many high stat applicants get rejected when those with lower get accepted–as it does a full file review and you should consider essays very important. If you want business apply for it; do not take advice given by friend. One can attempt transfer into business after freshman year but chances are no better and probably worse than if you apply as a freshman – it is the hardest college to transfer into from another college at the university. Also, when you apply, you check whether you want to be considered for admission even if you are not admitted to business and if so you will be considered for DGS if business does not accept you.

Also, it’s good to remember that there are plenty of amazing business schools out there besides UIUC. Personally, out of the four I applied to, UIUC was my last choice. Generally speaking though, I do believe that UIUC has a great business school, but make sure that the individual department you’re interested in is going to offer you everything that you want. I forgot to mention, APPLY EARLY. It always helps. The later you apply, the less chance you have of getting in. Good luck.

Thank you for the responses!

My courseload isn’t all that impressive, but I personally consider it rigorous (or at least time consuming).

English: Honors all 3 years, AP lit next year (As and Bs)
History: Honors world history, honors US (A’s). next year AP Psych and AP Macro
Spanish: 4 years honors level (A’s)
Math: 3 years regular level (A’s), AP AB calc next year
Science: 3 years regular bio, chem, physics. A’s.

So I’ll be graduating with 4 APs.

At a recent visit to U of I, I actually got to talk to one of the business deans, Mr. Hedeman I think? He stressed that essays are very very important on the application. He also told me that as far as ECs, it isn’t necessary to be extremely involved in business-type things, but rather just to be deeply involved in something(s). After all, newspaper takes up a ton of my life and its benefits on my high school career span much further than just journalism.

And yes, I am equally interested in Indiana’s Kelley School of Business, as they have great scholarships and the school itself is top-notch. Other midwest schools as well as USC are on my list, but UIUC and IU are at the top right now.

This is true. You really just have to prove strong demonstrated interest and it doesn’t have to be business related to get into the business school. You actually have almost the same courseload as the kid I know who got deferred, but your ACT is higher so I think you’re very likely to get in. I was extremely suprised when he got deferred because he was really qualified.

Also, you’re talking to someone who got into UIUC, IU, USC, and Michigan, so if you have any questions about the admission process or need any advice send me a PM.

Hey Jax,

Seems like we’re just following each other around on these boards. I think you have an excellent chance. You have a solid ACT score in my opinion. I highly doubt 1 point would be a make or break decision. Your lack of volunteering is well-augmented by other activities, so I wouldn’t fret. Just write good essays, and I think you should have a great chance. Best of luck! ps: If you have any questions for a current student, message me. I’m in Engineering, but I’m pretty knowledgeable about campus.

Taxi and Cooljay, I will definitely keep both of you in mind as I get closer to that EA deadline and more involved in the application process. Thank you for the feedback thus far.

I think where u are matters as well, and UIUC’s impression of your school. My stats werent that great, other than a high SAT score- but I still got in the business program cuz students from our school have consistently left a good strong impression on UIUC. Around 35-40 get in every year and we hav around 200 ppl in our grade.

You have a great chance man! Well, hopefully… I mean those are great credentials, better than mine. I got you beat in coursework rigor though.

I’m going to be applying for UI business next year too and I am aching to get in. It’d be a shame if you don’t get in because that would mean I would have no chance.

Your in, just apply early to be sure. :)

Instead of making another thread, can someone chance me for business as well? I am also a Junior.

Stats-

 • Illinois Resident
 • Caucasion male
 • 4.1 weighted, 3.9 unweighted and 40/590 rank (top 7.5%)
 • 28 ACT (waiting for results on Wednesday’s ACT, could go as high as 29 or 30)
 • 5 AP’s (Language, Calc AB, Psychology, Macro Ec, Stats) and 9 Honors classes

EC’s

 • 20 hours a week of work Experience since end of sophomore year
 • Participated in an Accounting competition (my school came in 5th place, I ranked 3rd for people from my school) and also participated in a Business Case Competition (no rank)
 • Peer Tutoring (3 hours a week)- Soph, Jr, and Sr year
 • I Play guitar at least an hour a day with weekly lessons- all four years
 • minor volunteer hours (about 20 hours so far, looking to get involved in something big this summer)
 • Football for a year, FBLA for a year

I think youre chances are decent, I got accepted into the business class of 2013 as well as the honors program. UIUC’s business school is world known and is building up a strong reputation. I spoke to the Dean and the college is very ambitious and predicts to be a top ten program within four years

I think you have a good chance also.

Yeah i think you two both have a good shot… i got deferred but later accepted with 8 AP classes and 8 other honors classes, 1270/1920 SAT, a good amount of extra-curriculars and class rank of 68/663 (GPA 4.2 weighted)… I’m out of state so i don’t know how much that impacted my acceptance–i’ll be going to purdue though b/c out of state is waaay too much $$ (not going to IU b/c of their overall reputation)
