My son has a C in K201 at the end of the semester. All the others are A- or above. Will the "C" affect his chances of getting into the Business Honors program?

The business honors program looks at a lot of different factors and GPA is only one. The cutoff to apply is a 3.7 at the end of freshman year. From what I have been told there is some sort of point system for all the factors and in terms of GPA you get one point if it is above 3.7 and two points if it is above a 3.8.

They also look at things like leadership positions, letters of recommendation, and an essay.

Thanks for the feedback maxellis.

This sounds like a pretty difficult criterion to maintain after I-core. More so than being a Hutton Honors students. This is forcing many students to take weed out courses at other IU campuses.

Dismissal Policy

Students face dismissal from the Business Honors Program under the following circumstances:

Two consecutive term GPAs below a 3.0 will result in dismissal.
If a student earns less than a 3.5 cumulative GPA, he or she will be placed on probation. To be reinstated, the student will have one semester to regain a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Failure to have a 3.5 cumulative program GPA for more than one semester will result in dismissal.
Erratic semester GPAs are scrutinized and may lead to dismissal, regardless of cumulative GPA.
Any unprofessional or dishonorable behavior will result in dismissal.

I guess I don’t understand what is so harsh about this policy. Any student who is going to graduate with Business Honors on their diploma should be able handle these requirements, shouldn’t they?

What am I missing?

IllinoisMom2006,

In order to maintain the honors or scholarship awards, some criteria are as follows:

1) Hutton scholarship - maintain a GPA > 3.4
2) Cox Research Scholarship - maintain a GPA > 3.0 (This is extremely low compared to previous year’s standard.)
3) Kelley Scholar - Maintain a GPA>3.5
4) Excellence Scholarship - maintain a GPA > 3.0
5) Hutton Honors - Maintain a GPA>3.3
6) General Honors Notation - Main a GPA > 3.5

The criteria of business honor students and Kelley scholars have to maintain the same GPA criterion?! I believe that quite a few Kelley students may not be able to maintain the 3.5 GPA by their senior years due to tough upper level courses. Therefore, is it worthwhile to try getting into the business honors program only to lose the notation by graduation. How many Kelley students graduate with Business Honor notation?

But a General Honors Notation from Hutton (#6 above) also requires a minimum 3.5 GPA.

I really believe that if a student can get into business honors, which is pretty difficult to do, they can meet the requirements for the honors designation. I can’t recall any students reporting that the upper level classes are that much more difficult than the lower level classes. Maintaining a gpa>3.5 should not be that hard for this caliber of student.

I don’t know how many Kelley students graduate with a Business Honors notation, but I do have the Commencement book from the May 2011 ceremonies. When I look at all of the names of graduates from Kelley, none of them specifically state Business Honors after their name. But what is designated after some of their names is either:
With Highest Distinction (requires a 3.90-4.0),
With High Distinction (requires a 3.80 - 3.8999)
or With Distinction (requires a 3.70-3.799).
A student doesn’t have to be in Business Honors to get these notations on their diplomas.

The true benefit of getting into Business Honors is that it “gives you the benefit of smaller class sizes, leadership development, close interaction with faculty, your own honors advisor, and networking opportunities with alumni and corporate guest presenters.” It’s not the Business Honors Notation that really matters, it’s the special attention that a student gets by their participation, IMO.

The Hutton general honors notation is only >3.4, which should be very easy for any Kelley student that is also in Hutton, and even easier for those in both Hutton and Kelley honors. Honors students take weed out classes at other campuses, but I don’t think they do it just to maintain a 3.5; they are probably trying to maintain more like 3.7 and even much higher. There are just way too many easy grading A or A- classes available to Kelley honors students for their gpa’s to fall below 3.5., even with upper level classes negatively impacting their gpas at the end of their schooling. How many upper levels do Kelleys take, other than Icore? Seven to ten maybe. You can build a huge buffer to keep from falling to 3.5 during your last three semesters in Kelley. Kelley Icore average gpa is over 3.6; compare that to about 3.05 for non honors Icore. And even after Icore, honors students can take Z304, X420, and Z494; all have easy grading and helps keep the gpa way up there in junior and senior years, just like honors icore does.

Also, there are lots of reasons to take weed out classes at CC or other IU campuses (and these really are not weed out classes for direct admits and Kelley honors students, because they are already in Kelley; they can get a solid C in these classes and still not get weeded out) other than keeping your gpa high, although that is a very good reason. If you take some classes in summers at cc, you can keep yourself at a light schedule during regular semesters and work on ECs. Or you can open up your IUB semesters to more upper level Kelley classes and double or triple major. If you are an accounting major, you can do your 150 credits for the cpa in four or four and one half years by doing cc classes the first couple of summers at IU or even before the freshman Fall semester.

More than 100 senior honors students took Z494 in fall and spring last year, and their average gpa at the end of the semester they took it was 3.75, so I doubt that many of these business honors seniors was below 3.5.

Great advice, Ace, to build your gpa as high as possible in order to have a buffer for when you take the non-honors upper level Kelley classes. These don’t have much, if any, grade inflation.

bthomp1 & IllinoisMom2006,

Thanks for the insight. I will advise S2 accordingly.
