Chances for LACs?

I think I (finally!) have a tentative list of where I'm going to apply--just worried I'm aiming too high, haha :)

Asian-American female, attending a public magnet.

Rank: 29/436
GPA: 3.75 UW / 4.396 W

Taking out freshman grades, GPA is 3.938 UW / 4.75 W. Not so much an upward trend here as an upward leap :>

Scores:
SAT: 2380 (800 CR, 780 M, 800 W)
PSAT: 234 - probable National Merit Semifinalist
SAT II: 800 Chem, also planning to take Math II and one other - probably Lit
AP: 5 Bio and World Hist.; waiting on Calc BC, French, CS, Chem, APUSH, and Lang

Junior schedule: 7 APs (ones listed above + Calc AB) plus a "post-AP" class - Chemical Engineering. This is about as rigorous a schedule as anyone at my school has.

Senior schedule: AP Gov, Econ, Lit, Physics C; PE; Georgia Tech Calculus II and II; Magnet Research (required).

Extracurriculars - oh boy. :S
Piano - 10 years, planning to cut a CD for any colleges that accept that kind of thing
Math team (10-12)
Inkwell/Creative writing club (11-12)
Computer club (11-12)
NHS, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, etc. (11-12)
Also doing an internship at Georgia State over the summer.

Chance me for the following schools:
Swarthmore, Vassar, Reed, Barnard, Grinnell, Oberlin, Bryn Mawr, and UGA (safety) for completeness, I guess. :P

(something clever involving a tumbleweed)

(in other words, bump)

You have great chances. You really should already know that though… Just make sure to have a good essay! Good luck!

yeah you have a really good shot at all those schools, but just a suggestion what about schools like amherst, carleton, bowdoin, and all the other top LACs. you should take a shot at those, but that is just my opinion anyways.

good luck!

Haha, I’m flattered that you think I have a good shot–I’m really worried my lack of ECs will hold me back, though. And I have looked into other LACs, but except for Carleton they all seemed more preprofessional and just–not really my kind of vibe? Also I was already worried that my list was too reach-heavy.

And, er, another question: how necessary is doing the interview for these schools? I know LACs like for you to show interest, and I doubt I’ll be able to visit (we could probably find the funds, the problem is time) so I guess interviewing is basically the only way I have to show interest. My problem is that I’m not a very good interviewer–I get really nervous and deer-in-the-headlights-ish–and I sort of suspect that I’d make myself look like a head case. :S

I mean, if it’s seriously going to hurt my chances not to interview then I’ll just try to prepare as best I can, but.

I’d consider adding Carelton and/or Haverford to your list. They both have amazing sciences.

yeah carleton is a good school I just got back from doing a program there and it is a really nice setting. Althouhg it is fairly far from any known civilization.lol.

good luck.

aiming too high? i think you’re aiming too low  jk
Swarthmore-Low reach/High Match
Vassar-Match
Reed-Match
Barnard-Match
Grinnell-Match
Oberlin-Match
Bryn Mawr-Low match/High safety

If I were you I’d add a few more reaches and cut down matches;

For reaches, keep Swarthmore, add Pomona, Amherst and Maybe Haverford
For matches, keep Reed & Grinnell & Oberlin, drop Vassar & Barnard
For Safeties, keep Bryn Mawr

You’re a lot more optimistic about my chances than I am  I’m just thinking…I’m really missing the EC part of the equation, and there are so many qualified applicants who have it all. [shrug] Vassar in particular I would have classified as a reach.

As I said before, Amherst doesn’t really seem like my kind of place…and Pomona didn’t really jump out at me either. I did consider Haverford, but ended up choosing Vassar instead since I liked it a little better. Carleton was on my list at one point but I never looked at it seriously–maybe I’ll check it out again.

I agree with what everyone said.

You got it girrrllll.

Chance me back?

Haha, thanks.

Any other thoughts?
