Chances for liberal arts schools, etc.

hey all,

I posted a while but now I have my SATs and stuff.

Gender: Male (hey, it matters at some schools!)

GPA: 3.63 unweighted, 4.1 weighted

Junior courses: AP Spanish, US History H, English H (taking AP comp though), Physics H, Precalc, Architecture, Orchestra

my school offers few APs, and limits students to take only two per year (and taking APs in Frosh and Soph. year is difficult)

High School: Lick-Wilmerding
to add a little perspective, our school has the highest acceptance rates to UCs in California. The average GPA and SAT acceptance to UC Berkeley is a 3.7 GPA and 1390 SAT (44% acceptance rate to UC Berk.)

SAT: First time, i'll probably take it again
Math: 680
Verbal: 670
Writing (ouch ouch!) 640

SAT II: None yet, but I will be taking World History, Math I and Spanish

EC's: Probably my strongest point:

Club Founder and Leader of the Middle East Discussion Forum
20 hours with Habitat for Humanity
100+ Hours with Rebuilding Together (designing sign for pre-school in Hunter's Point)
800+ Hours with Amigos de las Americas, including fundraising and two months abroad (i'm going to Nicaragua to teach children about malaria preventitives, and Youth empowerment)
Piano: have been playing since I was four
Orchestra: Percussion and Timpani, four years
Kung Fu: Black Belt
Track and Cross Country: Three years

Portfolio: I have a huge portfolio with models, and architectual floorplans which I will be submitting

So here are the schools:

Macalester (avg. gpa and sat from my school accepted = 3.6, 1350/1600)
UCB, UCD, UCSB, UCSD, UCI
Colby College (3.58, 1330)
Oberlin (3.7, 1390)
Carnegie Mellon (for architecture, 3.62, 1370)
McGill (3.5 avg gpa, 1330)
Lehigh University (3.5 gpa, 1360 sat)
Georgetown (top choice, 3.7 gpa, 1400 sat)
U of Michigan (3.63 gpa, 1440 sat)
U of Virginia (architecture, no data)
University of Southern California (3.57, 1322)
Haverford (might apply ED, 3.8gpa 1400 sat)
Syracuse (3.4 gpa, 1280 SAT)
Vassar (3.8 gpa 1400 SAT)
Tulane (3.5 gpa 1320 SAT)

Yeah that's alot. I'm going to only choose eight- my pratical fav's are Colby and Macalester. Feedback much appreciated

-sean

if it helps i'm a minority (middle eastern muslim) living in california (so getting into uc's is easier..)

bump bump bump.. please respond?

bump.

c'mon guys.

AFAIK, Cali law bans affirmative action based on race for college admissions (to state schools, so all the UCs); either way, it's pretty lame for me to say this, but being Muslim probably isn't gonna help you that much right now.

I'm not too much of a liberal arts person, but for the engineering schools on your list, I'd say Mich and CMU are both matches for you. I dont know how less competitive UCB in-state is, but basing off of OOS, I'd put it as a slight reach.

I'd say try to get all your SATs above 700, and you have a great shot. Just don't slack on the essays or the interview: they are half the app.

i don't usually do chances but i just wanted to say hi cause i live in SF and I have a friend who is a junior at Lick! so yea, thats it. good luck with your college search!

really? what's her name? i know her b/c im a junior too

bump, btw

i know uc's don't have affirmative action (dangling modifier; living in California helps alot for UC's)

I also heard getting into UVA and U Mich is hard for out of state students - is this true? If so, do I have a chance?

SeanMcG:

UCB: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Safe Match

I wouldn't do haverford ed unless it's really your first choice and money is no object to you. go for georgetown ea, and any other ea's you'll probably get in at haverford anyway as long as you can raise grades or sat's.

You have bthe bstats from your school, what more do you think you can learn here?

actually, the stats aren't really reliable because the amount of students for the privates are small (minus macalester and the UC's). So feedback from the other ones would be good. Plus, that's only GPA and SAT and as we all know an application isn't only about the numbers
