I realize these kinds of threads are kinda annoying but here goes: Just wrapped up my junior year in a fairly competitive public HS with about 400 in my class. I live in northern virginia, which has been known to be one of the toughest areas in the country to obtain a nomination and appointment.

our county-wide grading scale is as follows: A (4.0) = 94-100, B+ (3.5) = 90-93, B (3.0) = 84-89

(uw) GPA: 3.808
(w) GPA: 3.923 ---6 weighted IB classes jr. year with an added 0.5 for everyone taken.

May SAT: 650 v, 630 m :( I know
April ACT: 30 e, 31 m

other stuff:
Boys State delegate
NASS attendee
varsity tri-athlete (football, track, tennis)
captain of football, tennis
VP of Nat'l Honor Society
Debate
volunteer work (hospital, teacher, tennis coach)
orchestra
worked a paying job

this is a rough activity sheet but do i have a shot at an LOA? an appointment? I feel as though not being an eagle scout and/or a class/SGA officer will come back to haunt me. thanks, I appreciate any feedback.

It's been said many times before, and now again. Your objective is not an LOA. That's a total crap shoot not worthy of your concern. You're doing fine, it would seem. Stay the course. keep working. Forget about the LOA as you've no control over that process. Great if you merit one. Most who are at USNA did not receive one. Shoot for the gold ... an appointment.

I got an appointment and LOA (both late, didn't turn application in early) with a 640 V, 710 M, like a 4.04 W gpa... only really had volleyball as my sport, not captain, not being recruited, VP for NHS, Pres for a political club, a lot of volunteer work, a lot of world affairs/politics/leadership based clubs or programs... I wasn't in eagle scouts or an SGA officer. I was treasurer for my home room... basically just collected money for trips. Nothing big.

I think you seem to have a good balance of everything. Do some practice math tests and get the score up a little. Otherwise, work on contacting your congressman/senator about nominations and get your application done ASAP

Stats look pretty good, I heard my BGO say that most of the candidates that attend NASS are really competitive for an appointment. I'm sure you know that there were many cases where candidates were fully qualified and have nominations but don't get an appointment. Only one way to find out, apply. Good Luck!

You look solid accross the board. Coming from that area, it may be a bit tougher. Definately retake the ACT and take the SAT as those tests are HUGE when it comes to admissions, and are things you currently have control over. You can't magically become an eagle scout overnight, but even a single point improvement on your ACT math or english can really help your WCS, whole candidate score. I think you are looking good though. Best of luck to you.

Should have put this in my earlier post; I didn't get a LOA from Navy, but I did from WP and USAFA with a 30 math and 33 english. Don't stress out about it... you are VERY competitive for an appointment. As Whistle Pig implied, there is no cut off for a LOA, nor does there seem to be any rhyme or reason for why some candidates get them and others do not. As he put it, a crapshoot. But the better your tests, the better your score, the more likely you are to be a midshipman with 2013!
