bumpity bump

If anyone else in the know would offer an opinion, I would sure appreciate it.

I don’t know if this is true, but I heard that 1800 was a cutoff this year to get in main campus. Anyone else hear this?

^Cut-off?

My friend got into Main Campus for fall with a 1740.

Apply for summer. My son is there now doing Leap program and loves it. His stats were around yours for SATs but lower for GPA. He is so glad that he is doing the LEAP program and from what we read on theses boards i haven’t seen one person who didn’t have a good experience doing it. So good luck and hope you make it.

LTMREM-Thanks for the encouraging words!

Dear slpjig- your welcome- Just a few words of advice if I may. These boards can be great with a lot of useful information and I have found out alot of things that have really helped us, but try to remeber a few things. Every case and student is different. There are so many factors involved when admission decisions are made. There is no such thing any more as - " oh you will definetely get in or no you definetely wont" unless of course you had a 112 GPA and a perfect score on your sat or a 65 GPA and did really badly on the SATS. Also apply early admission and get it in as early as possible. Make sure your school sends in all the necessary paperwork as soon as possible. My son did not want to do the summer program. He hated the idea of starting school so soon after graduation. But he wanted PSU so much that he was willing to do it and it was the right decision for him. He has made some great friends and has been having a great time while getting 6 credits. Let us know what happens. Enjoy this summer and spend time with your friends and family, because hopefully next summer you’ll be at Penn State.-Good Luck

miche…
that 's what i was told when i called in the spring. my daughter had a 1750 and a 3.87 gpa. she is oos, so maybe the scores are different. she was accepted summer session doing the leap program which she loves.

I don’t think you’ll get in at Main campus with your SAT’s…even summer session and even legacy.
I know some who did not…work on the SAT’s…your GPA should be okay if you maintain the 3.5 senior year.

BTW—I’m hearing that many state schools will be more competitive yet in the next year or so because of the economy…some who might have applied to private schools are now looking more seriously at state schools so applications to state schools are up and therefore harder to get into the “main” campus at state schools.

born2b-Thanks. I am getting a little extra help to try to pull up my SATs, my grades will be solid. I guess other than that, there’s not a lot more I can do now.

slipjig, I recommend that you read this thread–
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html
Following Xiggi’s SAT prep advice is considered by many over on the parents’ forum to be the best strategy. (I see the thread has been in “stickied” the SAT forum.)

1moremom-Thanks for the link!

my son applied with similar sat’s, a 4.2 W and double legacy and a sister there- in state. i used to ask for his chances and everyone said that he’d be a shoe in. he did not get in to UP for summer. i recommend that you don’t get your hopes up at this point from everyone’s opinions. from our experience the 2/3 gpa and 1/3 sat wasn’t applied to my son. do your best to break 1800. :-] if not, no worries, you will be at a college that works best for you.

psualum80-Thanks for your input. It must have been very disappointing for everyone when your son didn’t get in. My Plan B is either Altoona or my local branch, but it’s hard not to hope.

Dear slipjig- just one more piece of advice- aside from asking for summer on your application- If for some reason they only offer you a branch campus call up admissions and respectfully plea your case and why you really want to come and be a part of PSU UP. You might have been on the threshold and that extra effort with the call and explaining why you want to really be there might make a difference. Good Luck once again

LTMREM-Thanks for the advice. I guess at that point it couldn’t hurt and might help, right?

Yes slipig we have heard of cases where it did happen. The student we know with similar stats called up admissions after only being offered a campus branch and as soon as she said how badly she wanted to be a part of the whole Penn State UP experience and about how she knew this from the minute she stepped onto the campus the admission person pulled her file and then offered the summer program. But as I said before every student is different and there are many factors involved. Make sure you apply to other schools that you would also be comfortable going to and have a good chance to get into. Try to do all of the application stuff as early as possible. You only get to be a High School senior once so try and enjoy this year. I wish you good luck and hope you get into the best school that will be the right place for you and hopefully that will be Penn State
