Hello everyone, I am currently a junior in Northern California who is interested in pursuing a major in film production. I really love film-making but my experience is only limited to a few amateur shorts and videos for school projects. I am looking into these schools for film production: USC, Chapman, NYU, UCLA, LMU, UCSC, UCSD CSU Long Beach, CSU Northridge, and CSU Fullerton. It's too bad that most UC's only offer majors in film studies rather than emphasizing hands-on production.

That being said:
What are my chances for these schools and what steps do I need to take to improve my chances?

Current weighted GPA: 4.0 (could potentially raise it to 4.1 this semester)
SAT: 1990 (superscore 2000).
Extracurriculars: Varsity Tennis (3 years), National Honors Society, Debate, and I am planning to get a job this summer

Since you are pursuing a major in filming, your circumstances are slightly different.
Your SAT’s can be higher, but they are not hopeless, and your extracurriculars aren’t quite impressive (are you a senior already?)
But most importantly it all comes down to your portfolio, since you are doing film. In your essay you MUST talk about what kind of paramount influence filming has brought out of you in order to aim for amazing film schools like USC, NYU,and chapman. I’m also a bit worried about your grades because your SAT compared to your solid 4.0 may imply grade inflation in your high school, which is not cool. I hope you can talk more about your extracurriculars and other random stuff though, those things are actually quite a huge portion of your application (stuff like how rich your family is is also a factor, to speak the truth.) I would say USC, UCLA, Chapman, NYU, UCSD are reaches, while the rest you have a decent chance. I have no idea what experiences you have with film so far though, so my judgment is not quite valid.
