and ASU, if only b/c it’s huge, and you say small is essential.
Without knowing your circumstances and the other parts of your application (and especially your essays), I would think that the combination of your ACT & GPA look on the lean side for a fair few of these schools, but that’s only part of an application.
I’m guessing you go to Nequa Valley high school. Great EC’s. Your GPA is low and your ACT is okay but not exceptional. Claremont McKenna, Bowdoin, Vassar and Middlebury are very long shots. Above some folks have called them Low Reaches but I don’t agree. Your UW GPA is the one that really matters. You strike me as the type of individual who would interview well, list of EC’s makes me think your energy level and enthusiam are off the charts. D had a 36 ACT and 3.8+ UW GPA and she was waitlisted at Vassare this year. If you have a Number 1 really want to go college then reach out to your admissions officer and strike up a dialog
@collegemom3717 Thank you. I have dropped Wesleyan and Vassar. I love the outdoors so I really like whitman. Bates had a good interview. For ASU, I’m only applying to Barrett which only has 3,000 students. Everything will be good except the essay. I just want to know which are my match schools or even high matches.
Good luck, JHUSoccer. ED is likely to be your friend, and I really really encourage you to visit some of these colleges before you narrow your list too far.
Also, remember that the job of the regional admissions person is to make you fall in love with their college. No matter how much you love them and they seem to love you, it is a sales function- almost bounty hunters, really. Depending on the person and the role they may have no real say who gets offers. Just be aware.
As I mentioned in one of your previous Chance Me threads, ASU Barrett and Oxy seem like matches, and I would add Whitman and Santa Clara as matches: http://www.oxy.edu/admission-aid/getting-in/class-profile (it’s a small school and should be good for pre-med) http://barretthonors.asu.edu/about/facts/ (but your GPA is lower than their average which is 3.8 UW) https://www.whitman.edu/admission-and-aid/learn-more/admitted-class-profile. http://www.scu.edu/ugrad/profile/
Have you visited Whitman? My D applied because the application fee was waived if you applied before 12/1, but she withdrew her app after she got into her ED1 school. Whitman seems like a great small school but not close to any major airport. Pitzer can’t be called a match since it has only a 13% acceptance rate, and Pitzer admissions will be wary of someone who is trying to get into one of the other 5C’s through the back door. You need to convince Pitzer admissions that you fit their profile, and really it’s much more hippie than preppy.
@JHUSoccer, Does your school use Naviance? If so, I’d encourage you to check how you stack up to previous years’ applicants. You have some very competitive schools on your list.
My GPA is just discouraging. I wish I could process information as fast as my colleagues and I wish I didn’t have type 2 diabetes either which is actually the obstacle im trying to overcome. I have difficultly concentrating on a test and a very bad memory due to this. My doctor did say I would suffer from this. There isn’t much I can do about it.
OP, don’t be discouraged. You have several excellent “match” schools on your list (I just listed Barrett, Oxy, Whitman and Santa Clara because I’m more familiar with them but I’m sure there are others on your list as well). You also have some long shots like CMC, Middlebury, Bowdoin. As long as you keep your list balanced you should end up with good choices. But I assume you’ve read up on applying to med school. Everything I’ve read says that college GPA will be extremely important. If you are having issues concentrating in high school, I’m not sure you need the added stress of getting into the most competitive academic environment possible.
You haven’t mentioned a need for financial aid, so I assume all these schools are going to be affordable. That’s super important too because in addition to a high GPA you want low or no debt when you apply to med school.
@Corinthian it’s hard to have your dreams let down sometimes. I’m picking schools based on collaboration. A high GPA and a high act is all my high school talks about.
@swampdraggin I’ve visited Bucknell, W&L, URichmond, Bates, Bowdoin, Tulane, Claremont Mckenna, Santa Clara University, and Occidental. I liked all of them. The vibes all stuck with me.
