Chances for Medill School

I'm applying as a transfer to Northwestern's Medill School Class of 2017. I'm currently a freshman at University of Florida, but I have a sophomore standing because so many of my AP credits were accepted here. I applied to NU my senior year in high school but was denied, since then I've been awarded some positions and accolades so I wanted to try my chances at a transfer, NU is my dream school.

I wanted to post my stats and gauge my chances because most stats posted are for people applying to more academically-driven colleges such as the school of engineering or school of medicine. Additionally, I was wondering if my chances would increase if I applied as a theater major, because their acceptances are less academically focused.

GPA: 3.4 UW, 4.7 W (upward slope, mediocre freshman and sophomore years)
Test scores: SAT- 2070 (M: 660, R: 720, W: 690)

Extracurriculars:
-President of my local library Teen Advisory Board, started 3 fundraisers and a tutoring program through it
-Operated an online store front (Etsy), made several hundred dollars
-Head Writer & primary cast member for school TV show that I helped revive
-Silver Knight Nominee
-Vice President of school Film Club, 2 years
-Hostess at local restaurant for a year and a half
-Extensive theater experience including Props Master, Stage Crew Head and Lighting/Sound Crew
-NHS member, AP Scholar With Distinction, National Merit Commended Scholar

Major: RTVF

My college stats are limited for right now but so far I have a 3.85 GPA and I recently got nominated to the Film Committee. I'm in an intro to telecommunications class where I'm hopefully going to build a relationship with the teacher and get a recommendation letter from him, as well as the college of journalism and communication's advisor.

RTVF is in the School of Comm, not Medill. Your GPA in college will be more important than your high school GPA, so you should make sure you do well this year. SAT is kind of low, but I doubt it matters nearly as much. No one can really gauge your chances, but you’ve got a shot. There are only 70-80 transfers that come from a group of 1000. I don’t know the acceptance, but those are the numbers for who actually comes.

I don’t know the basis on which you state that the theatre program “acceptances are less academically focused.” NU does not release separate statistics on the students admitted to this program. Postings on CC and personal knowledge suggests otherwise. There are applicants to the NU theatre program who have been waitlisted or denied while accepted to other highly selective schools such as Yale.

In any case, I don’t think it is a good strategy to apply to a program when your primary passion lies elsewhere, though it’s not clear whether you are looking to major in journalism or RTVF. In either case, even though your stats are on the low side, if NU is your dream school, it is worth giving it another shot.

To clear things up, I’m applying to the school of communications and majoring in RTVF- sorry! It’s been a while since I went through the application process and things have gotten foggy. I mentioned the theater thing only because I have a friend in the school who speculated that to me, but I after hearing what you said CCMom2U I agree that that sounds misinformed. Thank you both for your input, I’m hoping if I knock the essays out of the park I’ll be a worthy contender but I needed the reassurance that I even had a shot.
