Hi,I am presently studying in 9 grade and I am planning for my undergraduate education at some top institutes like that
of MIT,Caltech or the Ivys.I wanted to know my chances for acceptance through this forum so that I can be a bit confident
So,my profile goes like this:
1.I participated in some competitions like Spell Bee,Olympiads and I have an NCC ‘A’ certificate(NCC is like Scouts in the US)
2.I am a good student and one of the brightest students in my class and I always rank in the top 10 ranks.
3.I am involved in some charity work too.
4.I motivated more than 58 people to vote during the 2014 elections and I got a certificate for this from my school.
5.I have ideally solved 10 SAT sample papers and most of them are correct.
6.I played basketball and other games in my school and I am an active student.
These are some of my achievements till now. So,please reply and also explain about my chances and what I have to do in the future to achieve my goal.
What do you mean by ‘most of ur sat pprs r correct’??
Which city r u from?
Need SAT scores to accurately chance. Do you need financial aid?
Do you have SAT/SAT II scores yet? What is your courseload/GPA like (does your school have any AP offered or do you take honors?) What do you want to study in university?
Playing sports doesn’t matter much unless you can draw leadership experience out of it. Scores matter a lot if your curriculum strays far from what’s normal in America. AP courses would be good because they’re standardized. Your ECs are okay, but nothing you’ve said has set you apart as especially unique, at least to me.
9th grade is too early to chance anyone. Come back around your junior year, and maintain high GPA and SAT scores.
Hi I am sorry for replying very late.
@ShaunakK98 I mean that most of the answers of the sample papers solved were correct.
@sgopal2 I am still not eligible to write the SAT because of my age.
@kiriii As I still did not take the SATs the ones I mentioned were only sample papers from the CollegeBoard study guide. Also what is that “especially unique” thing which you have mentioned.
@viphan Actually my 9 grade almost got over,I will maintain my GPA and try to get a good SAT score in the near future.
What were your scores?
You can take the SAT younger than age 13. See below
Hi guys,
@ShaunakK98,I still did not take the SATs,those were only sample papers.
@sgopal2,Thank you for giving me info about the eligibility but I would like to take the test after my 12th.Will you give me some information about what I have to do in my tenth grade to increase my chances.Please.
Dude u literally have no idea about all this. Firstly even though they were sample pprs u do get scores. Secondly u can’t take the sat after 12th, ur application’s go before the boards
@ShanunakK98 Thanks for your reply, here are my score in maths my score was around 700,critical reading 698,
Writing score was 700 all these are from the online practice tests and some papers from the sat official study guide also I have given my best scores so far and thanks for your advice about when I need to take the sat I am planning to take it in eleventh grade.Thanks.
How did you do in the spelling bee?
From what you have posted, I’d say you’re in at Caltech.
^^ What possible basis do you have for saying OP is in at Caltech?!! This is why Chance threads are so ridiculous.
Thanks for your replies guys,
@mnm111 I did good at the competition,Ireached till semi finals but later I couldn’t continue.
@Falcon1 I am still in ninth grade,I don’t know what made mnm111 think like I’m at Caltech.
Anyways thanks for your replies.
@falcon1 that’s my point. This 9th grader from India wants to know his chances at the toughest colleges in the US. He’s provided us with some valuable information. Participated in a spelling bee? “I’m a good student”?? “I played basketball and other games”???
The whole thing is just ludicrous and shows a complete lack of understanding of the entire process.
I see. I didn’t realize you were being facetious. My bad.
@mnm111 I thank you for your response please tell me what I am ludicrous about and tell me about the entire process.Thanks.Please reply.
@c357911 Since you asked, what’s ludicrous is that you as a 9th grader are seriously asking your chances for admission these extremely competitive universities. You are way too young to have this discussion. You have no high school GPA or SAT test scores to even begin to get a sense of what schools you should even consider. While I appreciate that you think you might be a candidate for these schools, but the fact is that you simply cannot provide any supporting information at this early level of your education.
Do yourself a favor and stop obsessing about college at this stage of your high school education. Work hard, get good grades and then prepare for the SAT. When you have done all that, come back here and ask people to “chance” you for schools. With all of that information, you might get some reasonable feedback. For you to ask that question now is a joke and just shows how little you know and understand about the entire college application process.
Being a top student in your grade is not sufficient - being a top student in your province is necessary. Participating in Math or Science Olympiads, preferably ranking at the national level. Essentially, you need to be ranked at a national level academically and for extra curriculars. You just started, how high can you go by the time you’re in 11th grade?
Only 3.7% international applicants are admitted to MIT, almost all of whom were national or international science contest winners. Now you know what you’re supposed to do.
But there are many more schools than MIT and Caltech. There are 3,700 colleges in the US. Buy a Fiske Guide, or Princeton Review’s Best Colleges, or an Insider’s Guide to the colleges. Start reading.
@mnm111 thanks for telling me about what I have to do in the future and thanks for your advise about when I need to start actually preparing for this.I will come back to this forum when I am in my eleventh grade.thanks.
@MYOS1634 I thank you for your response.Thnaks for telling me about what MIT or the other top colleges want and what they consider I will try to get good grades, participate in these national and international level competitions and get involved in other activities too. Thanks for your response.
