PLEASE GIVE ANY INPUT. THANKS!

the UC schools should be fine for you. although you are a well rounded applicant, you don't really stand out from the rest of the people in the MIT/Stanford applicant pool.

i have a question though, how is orchestra class dragging you down in rank? when you still have a 4.0?

You show a lot of leadership in your ECs, I think you havea very good shot at the uc's.. and since you're in SD/Ca.. you get an extra boost..... Good Luck.. hopefully your essays and recs were good.

I think his school (like many) .. base their final rank on w gpa.. meaning many others got a 4.0 but had a higher wgpa

You're doing great man. I'd be shocked if any UC's turned you down (although it is possible). 75% @ even UC Berkeley is around 1450...so you're in good shape.

Yale is a longshot as it is for all. Same kinda goes for MIT/Stanford. I believe MIT & Stanford are more numbers based, so you may have a better chance though. Your math breakdown is critical for MIT...you should be very close to 800 in SAT I & SAT II.

Apply ED to the one you like the most...you have a chance at all of the schools you mentioned.

to gotgotrice: orchestra class is a 4.0 class, and therefore drops my weighted gpa a lot. it also takes up my ability to take AP classes. my school is a 4x4 block schedule, 4 classes per semester. 2 semesters a year. we finish calc BC in 1 semester. hope that helps.

stam: i heard E.A. is much tougher to get accepted into, is it opposite for E.C. then? they say "the top kids apply early. so hard to stand out, etc"

wow its late. 12:02AM. this forum is addicting =]

Samurai, admissions rate are at least double in the ED program. While the applicant pool is stronger, it is definitely worth it if you are POSITIVE you want to attend that particular school (the contract is binding).

ED is only offered at Princeton though? Applying to Yale/MIT early would only diminish my already small chances :(

MIT, Yale, Stanford: Reach
UCLA, UC Berkeley: Match
UCSD: Safety

good leadership, active in sports, participating in other clubs (i especially like the Rubik's World Champ event...rubik's cube?), violin (does that mean you are asian ;) ?), 11 AP's, decent SAT II, good SAT (maybe about 2250?), and volunteering at incredible hours per year (go speed racer). yep. I'd be surprised if you didn't get into UCs. and Stanford...it could happen. I don't know about MIT though. People that apply there, from what I heard, got 5's on the Calc AP (in which you have achieved), received close to a 1600, and 800 on MIIC, but still got rejected. I'm not sure if MIT bases that much off numbers because those who apply have almost the same ridiculously high stats. I think it's the ECs and the experience in the major intended. For example, if you apply for computer science, you better have been exposed to active applications of HTML, C++, and other computer languages.

There's something I've heard from many college counselors that can boost, (even if its a little) your chances at ivies.

It's good to have leadership positions, but its much MUCH better to show that you've done something with that title, instead of just having it for a long-attendance.

can you explain what you mean by that Sourapplez? thanks for the input

For example, let's say that I became president of a club, Editor of a newspaper, etc.

I need to DO something with that title. Like win an award in journalism. Start a fundraiser for our club to take trips for some occasion. Win awards. Recruit people to join. Win awards.

Did I mention you should try and win awards in your leadership area?

i was also wondering, does getting a JOB improve your chances any?? any difference between working at McD's versus at a Law Firm or being a tutor?

Getting a job would expose you to work experience which could improve chances. Yes, if you get the chance...do the law firm internship which is way more impressive than getting the job at MickeyD's. Being an intern for a practical job (when you get out of a college with BA or MA or even Ph.D) is an excellent idea. I have a friend who works at a law firm for internship. Not only is she getting paid better than most students at my school, but she is so much more sophisticated in how a company or firm works and how to handle professional life situations (unlike a job at Mickey D's). In my opinion, if I were choosing between someone with experience in law for and internship and someone who just worked at a fast food resturaunt, I'd pick the one who had the internship.

do you think calc bc is advanced enough for a tech school? i'll see if i can take something beyond it -__-

same with dustbowl, try to do something related to ur interested work field. that'll make u seem really committed, a big plus in admissions. also, don't be discouraged about stanford but its REALLY a weird school. basically all the top people i know who go to hyp get rejected from stanford for absolutely no reason. my friend, nat'l ambassador or something, amazing french horn player, leadership thats off the charts, amazing grades (u get the picture) got automatic rejection. not even a deferred. dont really depend on that school, but with ur scores u should get into one of the ivys easily

i think you're in for UC's

gee.. i was told by my counselor that UCLA (and above) is going to be a reach for me.. and that i should apply to UCI, UCD and UCSB... i feel kind of down.
do you think i have a good shot for LA and Berk? =T i hope i dont get rejected by all, and end up screwed.

First thing, all the UC's are on one app. So definitely apply to UCLA/UCB.

2nd thing, your counselor is crazy! I hate hearing about all these counselors that are so discouraging. I am assuming you are in state. If you are, both UCLA & UCB are matches, and you should get into 1 if not both of them. That 4.0 UW is impressive.

However, if you are out of state, they will be reaches for you.
